Mesopotamian Myths: A Captivating Guide to Myths from Mesopotamia and Sumerian Mythology (World Mythologies)

Good book. Just not the best I have read. Very standard info.
This book has very accurate translations of stories from the myths of Mesopotamia. One thing I wish they did differently was put the Sumerian portion first since all of the other Mesopotamian cultures were based on Sumerian beliefs. I did notice the “Mesopotamian” portion was mostly Babylonian. In fact they mentioned Akkadians once or twice. It should have been called “Babylonian” instead of Mesopotamian. Not a scholarly book for students to cite by far, but definitely an interesting read if you’re reading it for fun.

A bit sad ...
I was truly hoping for a few images, even if only the ones on the cover. There aren't any. It's purely myths, if that is all you are seeking. There is also some missing ink and smudges in my paperback.

Great explanations
I read this to get an overview of the mythologies, and very much enjoyed it. He includes context to help make sense of them, and explains different interpretations and different versions of the myths. I found it really helpful for understanding them.

Excellent Read for Mythology Buffs!
I really enjoyed this book! I love mythology of any sort and have just in the past couple of years begun to familiarize myself with the Mesopotamian/Sumerian cultures. This book was both interesting and knowledgeable, while at the same time being up-front with the fact that not all is known and that there are gaps in the archaeological findings. I enjoyed reading these to my 10 year old son and he was just as engaged as I.

Whetting My Appetite
I have been enjoying researching my new project of revisiting ancient mythologies and religions. Matt Clayton's captivating History series has been very helpful in providing a helpful summary account of some of the material that is new to me. In the Mesopotamian Myths book he introduces just enough material to whet my appetite to continue further research in areas I have long been interested in. I look forward to expanding my horizons in the field of antiquities in upcoming books in this series.

Fascinating Read !!!
A good overview of the earliest civilizations. One common thread in all civilizations are creation myths . Some are similar, others are not . Many draw from other cultures & assimilate into their own . But, nevertheless all have similar traits!Good job Captivating History!

Not too sure....
Not too sure how to rate this one as, personally, I just can't summon up enough interest to read ancient fairy tales about how previous civilisations thought the world began - and ran....it's all rather mindless. The similarities with more recent religions like Christianity (such as a universal flooding) are interesting.HOWEVER - the author has obviously done a lot of research and is passionate about the subject/s.If the subject matter is of interest to you - you'll enjoy reading these tales.
