For most of my life I have loved poetry, both reading its many forms as well as writing several published volumes myself. I have read several poetry collections from “Everyman’s library pocket poets” and enjoyed the variety and beauty of them. I am someone who has always loved Halloween because of its celebration of haunting fun. When I saw this book (Poems Bewitched and Haunted selected and edited by John Hollander) at a bargain price on Amazon I immediately had to have it as part of my personal poetry collection.This 256 page volume is organized into eight sections. Section one has poems about “Hags and beauties.” Section two covers poems on “Dangerous Procedures.” Section three includes poems on “Dangerous Venues.” Section four shows poems on “Dangerous Wooers.” Section five has poems of “Other Apparitions. “Ceremonials” are covered in section six. Section seven has poems about “A choice of Ghosts.” The final section covers “The Lighter Side” of ghost poems.I found this poetry collection a pure joy to read. The beauty of poetry is how every part of life’s experience can be told through the medium of poetry. If you are a poetry lover you should check out this wonderful collection. My only complaint is the length of some poems was too long and boring; nevertheless, this is still a wonderful collection to read.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. This collection has a very unique collection of poetry and prose! It comprises a wide selection of the best poets and you will not find the same old - same old content you are accustomed to. A truly haunting and creative collection, sure to please the most criticalof readers.

This is great bedtime reading for a dark and stormy night. The poems were well chosen. This book is fine enough for gift giving. The sections in the book are: HAGS AND BEAUTIES, DANGEROUS PROCEDURES,DANGEROUS VENUES, DANGEROUS WOOERS, OTHER APPARITIONS, CEREMONIALS, A CHOICE OF GHOSTS, and THE LIGHTER SIDE. Buy it now before the Halloween rush. I dare you!

This is a cute anthology of poems. The focus is on the supernatural: ghosts, apparitions, and other spooky themes. I always like these Everyman's Library volumes. Unlike others in the series I've read, this collection was mostly poems written before the 20th century and, in many cases, well before. I guess poets stopped being inspired by ghosts and hauntings in recent years. I especially liked "Invective Against Denise, a Witch," with its great imagery and imagination. Thomas Hood's "The Haunted House" was also quite excellent. Though gloomy it made good use of birds and nature. Alexander Pushkin's "The Demons" was also excellent. It was very spooky and you can feel the terror. There were a few clinkers: Shelley's "A Lovely Witches Cave" and Pope's "The Ghosts of Beauty" stand out on the negative side mostly for the flowery, hard-to-understand language. Recommended for fans of poetry and the supernatural.

Excellent little volume of weird poetry. Handy to have around at Halloween. Leans pretty heavily on older verse, though, so don't expect much from the 20th century here. Standard high-quality Everyman hardcover book and binding, too, although also very compact.

This is a wide variety of poems in honor of Halloween! I enjoyed the hauntingly beautiful ones as well as the funny ones so much, I bought another as a gift for a poetry-loving friend!

So so so sweet and charming and brimming with beauty and spookiness. Perfect from Halloween, Summerween, and basically all yeah round. And also, the front cover is just gorgeous, what’s not to love?
