How does the Zojirushi Ms Bento Lunch jar compare with the Mr version?

I have given Mr. Bento as a gift to a friend, and I also have the larger Ms. Bento with the soup container. This particular model of the Ms. Bento is about a 1/3 smaller in total size than the Mr. Bento. The other Ms. Bento has a soup container and is a bit larger. Both Ms. Bento models hold enough food to satisfy me at lunch, and I am an adult woman on the heavy side. Mr. Bento is too big.If you look on the Zojirushi website, they have a comparison chart showing the exact volume of the containers. What I would suggest is that you make a plate with your typical lunch portions and measure the volume of your portions to find the size that is closest to your needs.

Will food stay hot without using the outer jar?

No. The outer jar is essential for maintaining the temperature. The inner containers are just like any microwaveable food containers with a thicker lid.
