Good concept - poorly executed
This Game is targeting a key area within this gaming genre..But...there are some obstacles you must face if you are eventually at a point where you can enjoy this game. 1st - You will most definatly have to battle with the delay from mic to speaker....This affected my in-game score significantly becos I couldnt get rid of the delay no matter how many times I sychronized the friggin' thing. Secondly that freestyle mode is trash becos you cant even listen to what you just freestyled when your finished!!!! how pointless and...oh yes....not forgetting the video editing mode...it sounds cool but it really spoils the game becos you can only record for 30 seconds!!! whats the point??? And finally you cannot listen to your rapping after you've finished, there is no option that plays back your vocals which really destroys the longevity of the game becos theres nothing funnier than listenin back to your mates trying to rap - but unfortunatly that is not an option in this game.....basically in a 'nut-shell' this game is a glorified karaoke disc. And be warned ALL songs have no explicit content so there are some gaps during the raps which throws you off. Nice try Def Jam...but this game kinda sucks, solution - buy some decks and a mixer and a Real mic if u wanna be a Rapstar lol.

Def Jam Rapstar, a balanced review
Having had this game since Christmas and clocked up around 3 hours of rap time so far, I think it's now time to give a fair review, if for no other reason than to counteract the previous un-necessary 1 star rating this game has received.Although not my usual style of game, I have always had a soft spot for Singstar, having bought most versions since the 1st release on PS2, but I have always been a little disappointed with the implementation and selection of rap songs, as I am a fan of the genre. Having looked at the tracklisting for this it seemed like it'd be a worthwhile purchase (though the tracklisting on the American version is much better). Although I didn't know some of the songs very well if at all, due to the nature of rapping, you can pick up the flow pretty quickly and get into the groove. I did struggle with some of the UK rap, which alternate between rap and vocals frequently, especially the Ndubz songs, though with practice and a few more listens you'll get used to it.Rapping along to some of the classics, such as It Takes Two by Rob Base and Ez Rock (my personal favourite on this disc), Push It by Salt 'n' Pepa, Gin & Juice by Snoop Dogg, Brass Monkey by the Beastie Boys, etc is just great fun, they're tunes you should know well if you're interested in this game, and getting them spot on is very satisfying. Sometimes you can surprise yourself, I managed to get a 5 star score on 21 seconds by So Solid Crew 1st time out, something to be very pleased about! I haven't tried multiplayer at all but can imagine it'd be great fun if you both know a song well and can battle it out.To discuss issues raised previously, I have had no issues with lag or delay whatsoever, I've used the bundled microphone as I paid extra for it, though I do have the Singstar wireless ones I've not tried them so far. If you have the Playstation Eye camera it does record your performance and, like Singstar, you can choose a 30 second clip to upload to the community. Several of the trophies are related to the community features (rate a certain number of performances, upload a certain number of your own, get good ratings on your uploads, etc), though I haven't had the nerve to upload any of my videos yet! There have been a few additional tracks on the PSN to download, some of which are pretty good, such as Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang, I Got 5 On It by Luniz, Party Up by DMX, Ridin' by Chamillionaire, and hopefully more to follow. This is where my only concern with the game lies, although it's great fun, the single player Career mode is quite short, and I'm just hoping that enough people buy the game and the downloadable tracks to keep it alive, as it deserves to succeed.
