Denon DL-103R Moving Coil Turntable Cartridge - Black

Outstanding performance for the money. I took time to get the overhang, vertical alignment, tracking weight just right and wow I’m really impressed. I have to admit I was sceptical because of the conical stylus but I was proven wrong, this cartridge will extract details and sounds that moving magnet cartridges miss. This is a cartridge that is broadcast quality and was developed in conjunction with NHK of Japan and will make your vinyl sing. It’s a wonderful introduction to the world of moving coil cartridges for not a lot of money which in the world of hifi is a rare thing. Buy with confidence.

A very good MC cartridge at a more than fair price. I like the conical stylus very much, because it is so much easier to set up correctly than an elliptical one. I have a cartridge here that cost me twice as much, but I far prefer this one. Highly recommended.

Exceeded expectations! For the price, this cartridge beats some more expensive cartridges out there, MM and MC alike , as far as I can tell. It did take a bit of effort to install and adjust. Also, you may want to have a tone arm with an higher than usual effective mass (some turntables such as oracle will let you adjust this) as this cartridge compliance is fairly low. in my setup and after some careful micro adjustments to vta/vtf/etc it sounds better in every aspect than any digital recordings of same music coming out of my streamer. Tonal balance is spot on and the stereo image is accurate. You can hear micro subtleties of your favorite songs.

DENON DL103R; Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that every piece of hi-fi kit is a compromise when it comes to the reproduction of recorded music; hell, every recording is a compromise. If you want the real thing then go to a concert, and even then - which is the best seat? The Denon 103 (of which the 103R is a variant) is a stereo classic, dating back to 1963 and more or less continuously available to its adoring fans - to the bafflement of its many detractors. The 103 certainly divides opinion, and it’s easy to see why. It presents a series of audio compromises that some just can’t stomach. The drawbacks are easy to enumerate… -It has a conical stylus, which means that, with the best will in the world, it will never be as convincing on those inner grooves as a fine-line, or even bog-standard elliptical. -It’s prone to hum...keep it away from mains transformers -The plastic body is relatively flimsy, making it inadvisable to screw it really tight to the headshell -It needs a high-ish mass arm to really sing -It ideally needs 20-50 hours break-in time to wake up from new It is of course a low output moving coil design, and needs a step-up transformer or a capable phono preamp with at least 60dB of gain. In my system it replaced a Goldring 2040, a great cartridge where the wow factors are detail and sparkle. The Denon doesn’t really compete in either category; there is a noticeable HF roll-off so that subtle triangle “tings” can go missing, and it’s easily confused by dense orchestral passages which are laid bare with X-ray precision by the Goldring. BUT...but… The Denon 103R presents music in such a seductive, involving way. It somehow connects the through-line of the music better than anything I’ve ever heard. Instrumental and vocal lines are rendered with astonishing three-dimensional presence (the best soundstage I’ve heard from any sub-£500 cartridge). It puts you in touch with phrasing and expression like nothing else. Inner voices, especially, are satisfyingly presented (choral altos and orchestral violas benefit hugely) due to the 103R’s legendary mid-range. The bass is just phenomenal, and tuneful. For such a low-compliance cartridge (5 x 10-6 cm/dyne 100Hz), it tracks like a dream at around 2.5g. On rock music, while some “air” is occasionally sucked out, the punch and slam is impressive, it’s tight, it sings, it boogies like no other cartridge in my experience. Is it coloured? Damn right it is. Is there IGD? More like a sort of softening than distortion, but it’s only really objectionable if you, personally, have no soul. You may well hate it (world-respected audiophile guru Michael Fremer is definitely not a fan!) but I have never heard a cartridge remotely like it, and I, personally, love what it does. Whether anyone else will agree I couldn’t possibly hazard a guess!

Fitted on a Technics SL1210 MK2 with Jelco HS25 Headshell and Technics Auxiliary arm weight for balancing. I pondered a fair while over which cartridge to buy to replace my Shure M97Ex.....should I go MM again or have my first journey into the world of MC. I finally chose MC and the Denon DL-103R.....purely on reviews and reputation. My initial impressions are very favourable, the sound is superb, excellent tracking, clean bass, mid and treble.....with lots of details and nuances audible which weren’t there before. Stereo separation is improved over the Shure and the whole listening experience has been greatly enhanced. So far I am pleased with my choice and can recommend this cartridge wholeheartedly.

I bought this when my ZYX FS Fuji finally gave up the ghost, and I couldn't afford to buy a new ZYX. This was bought on the strength of its reputation, and it does not disappoint. This sounds awesome in my system. At least as good as the ZYX, which I loved. It's got everything I need; clarity, separation, dynamics and tone, but most importantly, it is wonderfully musical. All those elements come together to make a fantastic, cohesive whole. I really don't think you can do any better without spending over a grand.

A Phono Cartridge can cost Thousands, I needed a replacement, Not having £1500 for a replacement. I decided to investigate, and came up with the Denon 103R. To say the very least, this is Excellent for the price £299. It will perform in all areas, but will make Music beautifully, don’t expect the high end ??? But for the moment this product would give the more expensive, a really good run for there money. Buy this and be very surprised.

This is just my opinion based on vinyl over 45 years and getting older . Ive used too many carts over the years to list them all so I wont . I bought the 103R based on reviews and nothing else . Id had the std 103 and for certain types of basic music it was very very good but I preferred my 1042 goldring overall , diff but to me could cope with a lot more information when required . I have played enough instruments over the years to get a good idea of what they actually sound like The 103 tended to soften the top and muddy slightly over the bass . The 103R def made improvements to that but overall when hit with more complex material { I use a Audiomods classic 6 on a Gyrodek } it seemed to get a little wooly not in a nasty way but you knew it was missing a fair amount , possibly due to the conical stylus . Anyways returned for refund and bought a Denon DL110 which Id had a couple of before but not with this setup . Cut a long story short this TO ME is my fave cart for my setup at under £500 . It just in balance does more things right requires only an MM stage and to me sounds accurate tonally and has a decent tuneful bass rather than boom boom. Sadly the 103R has just not got what I am looking for in sound per pound and needs a good MC stage . I doubt Ill change the DL110 until I have a grand to waste .

Una certezza per l'appassionato di ascolto in vinile. Con una spesa accettabile si può finalmente ascoltare con la qualità di una testina MC di alto livello. Ascolto con un giradischi Pioneer pl12 e un amplificatore Denon PMA 800-NE. Visto il prodotto eccezionale si poteva dotare di una confezione più dignitosa e magari di una set con dima e bilancino di precisione. Ma va bene cosi

Een plezier om avonden naar muziek te luisteren met deze MC. Heel ontspannen, boeiende en samenhangende reproductie en mooi en niet overdreven gedetailleerd. Nog maar weing CD's beluisterd na deze aankoop !

Superb reproduction. Hands down the best budget MC cartridge money can buy. You will be hard pressed to find a better cartridge, period.
