Would this be ok for an 8 year old?

No i would say too young! More for older children as gives quite a shock.

What batteries does it take? It says 1 a but I imagine this is a typo?

Mine has x3 AA in the bottom unless they have changed what battery they use. Hope that helps

Is the setting which looks like a volume dial turned up. Ours nearly made people think they were plugged into the mains

Can u use it on yourself

yes - if you have no friends you can play with it on your own , however it defeats the object of the game if no-one can laugh at you or you at them when you get the shock ! : )
