will it work with win 8.1?

Cannot give an exact answer, as I only run Win XP Win 7. However, it is a fully specified USB 2 adapter, so as long as your PC has at least one USB 2 port, I can see no reason why it should be a problem.

how can I get the adaptor to work with windows 8?

Using Windows 8.1 Pro the device auto installed and presented as COM4: ATEN USB to Serial Bridge (COM4). Testing connecting to an Alpha server running VMS and it was fine. I did this a few times and sometimes it installed as COM4 and others, COM3. Using the excellent, and free, Tera Term as my choice of terminal emulator.

Anyone used with Windows 8 and a gender converter successfully ?

Used with Windows 8.1 for about 10 months now, mainly for Cisco kit using blue Cisco DB9 - RJ45 cable no issues.
