Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint - Smooth Black Finish 250ML, 5084863

My radiators are 45 years old and have never been painted. I wiped them down with a kitchen sponges sourer side and then with a tea towel wiped them clean. I then very carefully followed the instructions to the letter ! I made sure the heating had been off 24 hours so the house and radiators were completely cold. I then sprayed a mist coat over the radiator adhering to the distance I should spray from exactly. The moment I saw a single little run of paint I stopped spraying immediately. The paint is very forgiving if you get a run and stop immediately as it appears to self level and the run disappeared. I left further application coats time window to double to what the instructions said so: 1 Mist coat - leave one hour. 2 Next coat - leave one hour. 3 Next coat - leave one hour. 4 Next coat - leave one hour. I then left the heating off for a further 24 hours to allow the paint to fully cure. Each coat I applied in opposite directions, so first coat horizontally, then next virtually etc etc. The end result was I had a radiator that looked like a brand new gloss enamelled radiator and looks beautiful. The application is all about prep, not rushing and using correctly. The spray paint quality is wonderful giving a super gloss bright white finish that looks just like a brand new enamel radiator. One can is enough for one average sized radiator.

Just used this to paint a 20 foot shipping container and needed 4 tins of this stuff (and 12 man/woman hours). For our container it only needed one coat of paint all round, and then a bit of touching up. We found that Amazon had the cheapest prices all round. This paint is very thick, so make sure that you use a good gloss brush where you know that the bristles won't fall out. Also make sure that you have some good thick rubber gloves to protect you from the paint. We were painting in autumn, so if the weather was a bit warmer then may be the paint would appear thinner and apply better. Once on the surface this paint does appear to run quite easily, but we really had to slap it on to make sure we covered all the rust. It really was like painting with treacle. That said, the paint had dried within an hour and the rain just appeared as globules on the surface. Close up the finish isn't perfect, a few runs etc. From a distance it looks great and now it is protected from the weather for 8 years. Some people have said that you need specialist cleaning products .... we didn't. Good old White Spirit did the trick here. The instructions on the tin say that you can use thinners with the paint and then use a spray gun. However, to get the same coating you would need to spray 4 coats. In a gale force wind with autumn storms that wasn't appropriate for our use. So why 4 Stars? It would have been 5 - excellent finish and does the required job. We've deducted a star for it being so thick and sometimes difficult to slap on. However we do have a good end result and the container only needed one coat! All in all, we are very please with the finish that this product gave us. We have a shiny new container. Packaging Warning: My first tin of this paint was ordered from another supplier via Amazon. The packaging was excellent, the tin was sealed with tape and the tin itself was covered in bubble wrap. The box was the correct size. Brilliant. I reordered a second tin direct from Amazon using Amazon Prime. The first Amazon tin wasn't delivered as it "was damaged in transit". I had to collect the second Amazon tin and that was damaged too. The tin had been placed in a large cardboard box with a bit of brown paper stuffed in for good measure. When I opened the box, the box was Dark Green inside along with a bashed and leaking tin. I presumed the same fate had befallen the previous tin.

Bought 750ml, to paint a very rusty, galvanised bistro set. Used a wire brush to get the rust flakes off before painting. Have done 2 chairs & a table top and it has covered in just the one coat! There is half a tin left. Decorating anyway so brought it inside to paint. I wasn’t bothered about the mess in that area. Also, there is a nearby door I could open for ventilation. I Left it overnight to dry and then flipped the set over to paint all the undersides too. Paint does go a bit sticky in the tin after a while but I just re - stirred and it was absolutely fine. Extremely pleased with how it turned out and wouldn’t hesitate to buy again. Photo maybe doesn’t show - Bright Blue turns out a nice cobalt colour.

Great colour, great coverage. Painted water feature and keeping it well protected

Adheres very well to etch primer after chemically stripping, sanding and degreasing a radiator, do note it takes 24 hours or more to fully cure to prevent it being tacky and the surface from deforming. The nozzle on mine sputtered a few droplets twice onto the radiator when applying the first light coat from about 16cm away. One can is enough for a first coat onto a 90x60cm radiator, you will need additional cans for extra coats and a larger square meter surface area if you have dismantled the radiator and are painting the top grill, side covers, and the front(exposed) face of the radiator, there is not enough paint to also paint the rear of the radiator in one cans application. Ensure you cover the rest of the working area or have a cardboard spray booth setup as this paint will make everything it oversprays onto very tacky, if you have a extraction/ventilation setup be prepared to throw away the filters as this paint will clog the filter element if it is cotton pleated, if it's thin mesh then you can knock the paint off with some percussive maintainance and a solid surface - a air compressor gun will help remove it also. The glossy white does look very nice and has restored my tacky looking bedroom radiator that has been painted the same colour as the wallpaper the four times my bedroom has been decorated over the last 20 years.

Work perfectly

For the price, you think you're getting a quart... nope, it's 8 ounces, going to need 5 or 6 cans to get our wrought iron fence done... BUT, it's so easy to apply (it is very thick), and the results are fantastic. Our old fence got a major face-lift. The other alternatives for repair would have been more time consuming and more expensive, so this was a great solution. Hoping it really holds up 8 years as promised

La vernice si presenta particolarmente densa, tipo gel, e la stesura risulta difficoltosa con il pennello visto che le istruzioni consigliano di non diluire il prodotto. La resa dichiarata del prodotto è di 5 mq/litro ma dipende soprattutto dallo spessore delle mani date. Viene consigliato uno spessore di 40 micron per mano ma mi sembra eccessivo. La mia resa effettiva, a pennello, è stata circa il doppio. Su superfici nuove o carteggiate portandole al nuovo, consiglio una prima mano di fondo per favorire la presa della vernice. Consiglio comunque 2 mani per un risultato ottimale. Come da istruzioni, l'asciugatura è rapida e già dopo due ore la vernice non "attaccava più. Per la mano succassiva ho atteso 24 ore anche se le istruzioni riportavano 4 ore. Il colore asciutto è conforme a quanto acquistato. La finitura non è oro "lucidato" ma oro "ossidato", più scuro. Per la pulizia dei pennelli ho usato diluente universale.
