Are there words on any of the cards? ie does the language of the game matter for anything except the rules, which are easy to find online anyway?

The basic set is easy to play and without words however in the expansions; The Era of Gold,” “The Era of Turmoil,” and “The Era of Progress” all have cards with details on them in English to eplain the action and/or restriction. The instructions also give the same detail, I have printed out extra copies as it is useful to be able to refer to cards that 'might' be available in the deck.

what's the difference between the deluxe version and the regular (non-deluxe) rivals for catan?

The deluxe version has little plastic trays to hold the cards whilst playing and to store them in the box. Not sure if there are any other extras...
