Affordable, freedom for creativity, high quality sound.
The easy read instructions make the construction of this drum easy to do. Though you need to provide some clips of your own, (a litmus test of the handless of your toolbox) the overall build is great. I have bought two already so far and have been working on them and by far the most strenuous part about the woodwork is obviously the sanding of the body. Yet what's a good project if you don't have to put work into it? The wood is nice with a smooth finish but the freedom is all yours to make curves and indents, to varnish or to paint on. The only logo appears on the front of the drum. The sound of the drum is fantastic. Between the two drums, they are both very similar sounding with a sensitive snare in the upper half and a nice crisp bass as I was hoping for. If you're looking for a short project, maybe with the family or even to get creative with a blank drum, I definitely recommend this piece as it is cheap and a high quality construction kit.

great drum and a fun project to make.
Easy to construct with the right equipment (make sure you have a couple belt clamps and ideally a 90degree corner clamp or 2) this is a fun instrument to build. sanding is required on joints before they can slip together tightly. I recommend Gorilla Glue [[ASIN:B0058NUA6S Gorilla 236 ml Wood Glue]} once its all constructed and sanded down it give of a lovely tone and can be personalised with painting or varnishing. A lovely item for the cost. word of warning though. give plenty time for the glue to set before moving onto the next step in construction.

Great Starter Cajon for a very Reasonable Price
I bought this as a gift for my niece and assembled it myself. Assembly was pretty straightforward if you have decent clamps. You do need to trim the panels a bit either by planing and/or sanding. I finished my with waxoil and it looks fine. The sound is satisfactory - you could easily add additional snares during assembly. My niece was delighted.

Clamps not necessarily required, but something heavy to weigh it down, is
Great product, friend and I spent a couple of days putting this together. If you don't have clamps, the process will take a little longer as you'll have to weigh it down whilst it dries (as we did), but it's completely doable. Really enjoyed the process, cajon sounds great and looks brilliant, easy for a beginner with little experience and some supervision to complete successfully. Price is brilliant given what you get. I suggest some good masking tape to hold pieces in place in the absence of clamps, and some heavy weights (we used dumbbells).

The kit went together very easily, but you do need some basic woodworking skills and clamps. I found 2 x quick grip clamps and 2 x belt clamps very helpful. The parts weren't cut terribly accurately, so the edges took a lot of heavy-duty sanding to get rid of the overlaps. As it is, it's a dismal-looking plywood box, so be prepared to stain and oil/wax it. I'm very happy with the end result, and have had no issues with the snare, it works fine for me.

Value for money. Very good sound quality
Went for this option as it was half the price of a readymade one. Completed within a day. You need wood glue, wood clamp or weight and a drill+screwdriver for fixng. The booklet doesnt help. There is a youtube video if you search by the name of this kajon. Very happy with the sound quality.

Good value
Easy to assemble, inexpensive, a good way to get a taster to see if the cajon is what you want to play. We had an experience cajon player have a go and he says it is perfect for beginners and intermediate players.

Not for beginners, several issues with fit and finish.
Been toying with the idea of making a cajon for some time but there are some days when you can't be bothered breaking out the power tools and clearing up all the sawdust. I'm an experienced woodworker, but considering the price of this kit, it seemed like a good deal so I bit the bullet. This is not a kit for absolute beginners. Not only will you need some basic tools, and be prepared to do a LOT of sanding, you'll also need some patience to allow glue to set at each stage. Luckily. I had a set of 8 corner clamps so assembled the shell using those to maintain square, with a small bass amp on top to weigh it down. TiteBond 3 glue is the way to go here. Annoyingly, one of the side panels' tongued edge was pretty badly splintered on both sides so I ended up having to use some wood filler which meant a clear finish wasn't going to be an option. Quite why Meinl offer a kit with accurately sized and aligned tongue/grooved top/side panels then present you with an oversized rear panel and say "just stick this on to the rear edge with a bit of glue then sand/cut the excess off later is a bit of a mystery". Would be far more solid if the rear panel were rebated to slot at least partially inside the rear edge. Anyways, I stuck it on (with the aid of some concealed head 25mm brads for security) and it's held. Similarly, the front playing surface battens are slightly too small, making installation more fiddly than it needed to be. The instructions are definitely not the best - e.g. "the snare is fitted in the middle of the hypotenuse of the triangular batten". Say what? That is accompanied with a small and indistinct picture of what goes where. The front playing surface is similarly oversized and, in my case, pretty badly warped to the point where it would not sit flat on the front edge. I resorted to having to steam it and leave it under a heavy weight overnight to take out some of the bow, which worked fairly well. The overhang of the front and rear panels is such that if you're gonna sand it off, you'll need a mechanical sander and some 80 or 100 grit sandblaster abrasive, otherwise you have a long job ahead of you. I elected to use a small radius roundover bit in the router to form a slightly curved profile to each edge and dispose of the excess overhang. That snare? Install it so it wobbles on its mounting screws, loosely, otherwise you get very little snare effect at all. Meinl suggest oiling, waxing, painting, any form of finishing. Considering the exposed filler and plywood edges, I decided to go for a solid finish and went with textured cabinet paint to match my bass/guitar cabs (yes, I'm sure someone will say it will "kill the tone", it'll make sod all difference on this kit, it's not Brazilian mahogany and wenge for crying out loud) and for longevity, with a dyed playing surface finished with matt Osmo hardwax oil to offer some protection from grubby hands battering away at it. It sounded OK before I painted it, it sounded the same afterwards. The pic is of the "nearly finished" kit. The playing surface just needs de-nibbing. So, ultimately you get out of this what you put in, but it certainly requires more work than you'd first imagine to get a quality playable item at the end of the process. Mine sounds OK, nothing spectacular, but it's just to play around with and provide some acoustic backing. Why 3 stars? Firstly, I don't think the kit is that well presented and could have been better thought out. That could, of course, increase the purchase cost. The issues I encountered were: 1. Splintered edges to a side panel. 2. Front battens could fit better. 3. Front/rear panels could be far better sized to avoid excess sanding. 4. Rear panel should be rebated for additional strength and solidity. 5. Warped playing surface. 6. Potentially confusing instructions. Your mileage may vary. If you don't have the tools or access to materials to build one from scratch, this might be the way to go, but don't go in expecting the rhythmic equivalent of a Lego set or Airfix kit.

Well designed, easy to construce
This is a well designed kit, easy to assemble with basic wood working skills and tools. The directions are pretty good, but read them all first as they are not always in perfect order. In finishing the kit, a power sander makes things MUCH easier...hand sanding would be a chore. I would definitely build another.

Great cajon! Fun to build and long lasting
I built this cajon a couple of years ago. Mine just has the natural front. I don't think they had the others when I ordered it. I loved it then, and I still love it today! Putting it together was super easy. I didn't have straps like the ones shown in the picture so I just used a few small clamps and some books to hold it together while drying. After I assembled it, I had a friend paint a picture of a tree on one side and a quote on the other. Then I put a clear spray polyurethane coating on top of that. I haven't had any problems with chipping or anything. Sometimes a film builds up where I hit the face, but it cleans off pretty easily. I worked at a summer camp just after I built it and played it every day of the week for a whole summer, and it held up great! It has a good sound. You can get a decent bass towards the center of the face and higher sound at the top. I know you can get cajons that sound better than this one, but for the price, you can't beat it! Plus, you get the satisfaction of assembling it yourself, and throwing in a little of your own personality. I will say I wish I hadn't glued the front face to the body. It sort of deadened the sound a little, but I was able to make it work. Overall, I am very happy with my cajon. I might even buy the bongo cajon kit just for fun!
