Yes, no problem recording with just power cable attached and no power pack in.

Can you plug an external microphone?

There is no audio input, only a headphone output.

Is it compatible with a Mac?

I guess that it is compatible with a Mac in that it does not normally connect directly with any computer! When you use it you record onto a standard SD Card (which is formatted FAT 32) and the files are MST video files. You then take out the card and put it in a card reader attached to your Mac computer.
