Can this be used to extend with fuse on fireworks?

I’ve never tried it but it might work. Please be careful as the magnesium can get extremely hot and might set for to the firework itself.

Mainly as a fuse for things such as a thermite reaction as it burns at around 2500 degrees c. But can be used for several other things. When it does burn however it is incredibly bright so be careful looking straight at it.

What happens when I react it with sodium hydroxide?

Magnesium does not react with aqueous sodium hydroxide. For a metal to react with sodium hydroxide solution it's oxide must be amphoteric, not just basic. Alkaline earth metals are called that for a reason; except for beryllium the oxides are purely basic (and in fact moderate to strong in basic strength) in water, so sodium hydroxide won't make those metals react.
