Easy to setup
I found this monitor very easy to set up and configure. I have economy 7 but I only needed the single sensor as supplied. However, the software on the disc did not work (Windows 7). Go to the efergy website and download the latest software then there is no problem. But do make sure the date is correct on the monitor. This gives a good record of my usage over several time periods. After watching the real time energy consumption on the monitor, I think this will pay for itself very quickly in savings.

Useful addition to the 'must have' box !
Disturbed by ever rising energy prices, I decided to have a closer look at the electricity usage monitors available on the retail market - from which there are many to choose! The efergy E2 and the OWL wireless monitors , the type that sample total electricity outputting from the house electric meter, were picked to evaluate as both appeared to be claiming market leadership and both had similar favourable reviews. The display monitors of each are incidentally, remarkably similar in appearance The price for both was also similar, and for no particular reason I ordered the E2. This model is capable of downloading usage information to a computer software programme. The goods swiftly arrived from an Amazon supplier and the, plainly, good quality items were inspected and, using the set-up manual, quickly installed. This is a very simple procedure that takes barely a minute or so, after a manual pre-read through. The sensor is clipped around the identified cable exiting the electric meter and plugged into the small, eggcup sized transmitter. That's that and the duo can be left together by the side of the meter and within the meter box - if you have one. The transmitter will have been previously fitted with the appropriate AA batteries. With the display monitor to hand - also now fitted with AAA batteries - a small button on the back and a button on the transmitter are pressed - the manual instruction is quite clear on this. It is a rapid and simple procedure. The monitor should now show a steady `wireless' emblem and a small LED indicator should flash on the monitor and the transmitter at about six second intervals. That's it! Job done! The monitor can now be placed anywhere within range of the transmitter (about 40m) in the building, and will display data as wished. The manual is again clear on the various preferences one might wish to display.Does it work? Well, initially mind did then didn't! My house is a modern semi with the meter box on an outside wall. I was not over confident that a flawless initiation would be achieved and I was right! Within a short time the `wireless' emblem was flashing and a line of dashes had appeared where there should be figures. The manual says this situation indicates a loss of contact between the transmitter and the monitor.A further emblem was also flashing. It looked like a battery symbol. No mention in the manual of this - or indeed any other symbols, currently unknown that may at some time appear. However I rechecked the batteries and one in the transmitter had slipped from a tight fit in its slot. On correcting this all became well. The set-up is now working perfectly and by experiment have placed the monitor throughout the extremes of my house without loss of data. It is quite clear from observation that when, for example, an electric kettle is switched on, a 2kw increase in the displayed data is shown. Similar changes can be seen when switching on or off other appliances and lighting. This is a very intuitive piece of electronics and I hope when this `honeymoon' period is over I will not have become obsessed with forever closing down the house electric's system and living a life in semi darkness! The accuracy of the read-out data will not be of the quality of the official house electric meter but is still given as greater than ninety percent. At this level it will allow a reasonable check and comparison of usage against an electricity bill detail. It will activate a new energy awareness discipline I am sure and that is my prime aim.I haven't got round to using the software facility as yet - these are early days - but this promises to be interesting, when the historical data gathered by the monitor can be downloaded and displayed in various graphic forms. To conclude, this equipment will surely provide, for anyone, a more disciplined approach to energy use and will certainly appeal to gadget lovers or those who just love an analytical challenge!Pros: The components in the box appear well made and of good quality. Supplying Company has good reputation and a UK phone number! Reasonable cost. Simple to set up.Cons: No batteries supplied as standard. Instruction manuals okay but contain a few minor (non technical)errors and could be more comprehensive.

Not for Mac users
Hardware InstallationThe monitor and sensor were setup with ease following easy instructions. Had the monitor working very quickly indeed.Software installFor a Mac it was pretty grim. Efergy have not registered the application with Apple so straight away users are faced with a warning that that this software maybe dangerous and requires an administrator security override in settings. Next it spawns multiple other application/ driver setups. Most Mac users have never had to install a driver do this is very odd indeed. Two driver installs and an install of Adobe Air you are required to reboot the computer. Most Mac users go months without rebooting, so this is odd too. Overall a great sense of unease is instilled by the Efergy eLink install.Monitor usageIt worked well reporting realtime costs, energy usage and CO2 consumption. Additionally provided average usage for day week month. As a coffee table electricity monitor it does an adequate job.eLink SoftwareThe initial concerns were bourne out by the usage. It is an un Mac like app, it appears that the authors of this software have never seen a Mac OS X application. The design is confusing. On a Mac the magnifying symbol is used to indicate Search, but on this app it is resize the application. The usual three traffic lights in the top left of EVERY Mac app are absent here. So instead of pressing the Red traffic light to close the app as used in Every Mac app this instead requires rummaging around the application to find a button hidden away on one of the screens.Transferring data from the monitor to the Mac over the supplied USB cable was incredibly slow, took several minutes to collect a couple of hours of data. I dread to think how long it would take to download a few weeks worth of data, hours by the rate demonstrated.Overall the application is very pretty but largely alien yo any Mac user, navigating around using the unique design style employed requires significant effort and concentration. A great pity they did not follow all the standard Mac design rules and made it much much easier to use.OverallAs a coffee electricity monitor, it is solid, competent device. But trying to do anything else using the Mac eLink software is very disappointing and with, more competent products available not worth it, so I have returned mine and purchased a competors.A great pity.

An excellent and easy way to monitor energy usage.
This truly was "plug and play" on my mac. Downloaded the software, installed the USB drivers, added 3 x AAA & 3 x AA batteries, connected the sensor to my "mains In" in the garage, pressed the "Link" button and everything was up and running in under 15 mins. The sensor and receiver work through a thick structural wall between the garage and the house no problem at all.

why I think its a waste of money.
If you already have 90% led bulbs/low energy appliances its a waste of time, it only confirms your not using much energy. Its pointless/doesn't work well for anyone on a dual tariff/so doesn't display the summary accurately. I think the old spreadsheet way was actually a lot easier. The alarm is similarly pointless, its not exactly very bright, load or act in a way that would make you go over and look at it.I found setting the thing up in the first place difficult, again, doesn't help its not designed for dual tariffs that alter after a certain amount of kw's used.If I had the chance I would have returned it.

Tolles Teil

HO RECOMANO A TOTHOM!
