Do I need a separate shaving bowl for this, or can I just use the lid?

you can use the lid or just put it straight on your shaving brush & apply to your face. I actually preferred the latter method. You can buy a small bowl from Amazon if you wish for a couple of quid. It is a very good shaving cream, I again prefer the Proraso in a tube!
