Will it hold 400g balls?

I am afraid the 400g ball of yarn is too big dor this yarn holder...these yarn holders are good for 50-100g yarn balls.

Does the ball actually spin freely as it unwinds?

Yes, the only problem I had was that the spinner slipped off of the table I stood it on, but I glued a piece of non-slip on the bottom and it worked perfectly. ph

Would this allow me to use balls of wool with a knitting machine rather than a cone?

I should think so. The yarn fits on the top over the spindle and the yarn is taken upwards from the outside of the ball.

How long is the spindle?

THE spindle is 5” long. Keeps falling over though when you use it. Does not matter what size of ball of wool you use.
