Masterpiece!!
It is a masterpiece of suspense in the history of cinema. It is a wonderful film. I don't have much to say about the content of the film, as most of it has already been said. But I do have one request, not about the content, but about the film itself: 4K UHD, which is what the big screen is all about, and I am craving for a Noir-version (B&W). Just as I would love to see a Noir-version of Marathon Man, I am sure there are many fans who would love to see Noir (Black and White) versions of Alien and Godfather, as well as others. We are waiting for future releases. Thank you!

Marathon Man is a 1976 suspense/thriller film directed by John Schlesinger.
Thomas "Babe" Levy (Dustin Hoffman) is a history Ph.D. candidate and avid runner researching the same field as his father, who committed suicide after being investigated during the Joseph McCarthy era. Babe's brother, Henry (Roy Scheider), known as "Doc", poses as an oil company executive but is actually a government agent working for a secret agency known as "The Division", headed by Peter Janeway (William Devane). When the brother of a Nazi war criminal is killed in a traffic accident, Doc suspects that the criminal, Dr. Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier), will come to New York to retrieve a valuable diamond collection. After escaping an attempt on his own life in Paris, Doc comes to New York under the guise of a visit to Babe. Meanwhile, Babe and his new girlfriend, Elsa Opel (Marthe Keller), who claims to be from Switzerland, are mugged by two men dressed in suits. When Doc takes Babe and Elsa to a French restaurant, he tricks Elsa into revealing that she has been lying to Babe about her background. Though Doc suspects she may be connected to Szell, he tells Babe that she is seeking an American husband so that she can become a U.S. citizen. After Szell arrives in America, Doc confronts him, accusing him of involving his brother. Szell, after questioning Doc as to his own safety, then stabs Doc with a blade concealed in his sleeve. Doc makes it back to Babe's apartment but dies. The police interrogate Babe until government agents led by Janeway arrive. Janeway asks him what Doc told him before he died, and tells Babe that his brother was a U.S. government agent. Babe insists that his brother did not tell him anything, but Janeway is convinced Doc would not have struggled all the way to Babe's apartment without giving him vital information.Babe is later abducted from his apartment by the two men who mugged him in the park, and he is tortured by Szell, who uses a dentist's drill on him. During his torture, Babe is repeatedly asked "Is it safe?", but he continues to deny any knowledge. Babe is then rescued by Janeway, who explains that Szell is in America to sell off a large cache of diamonds which he had taken from Jews killed at Auschwitz. Janeway presses Babe about Doc's dying words, but Babe still insists he knows nothing. Frustrated, Janeway reveals himself as a double agent and returns Babe to Szell. Still unable to extract anything from Babe, Szell drills into one of his healthy teeth. Babe eventually escapes, aided by his skills as a marathon runner.Babe phones Elsa, who agrees to meet him with a car. Arriving at a country home, Babe guesses that Elsa has set him up, forcing her to confess that the home was owned by Szell's deceased brother. Janeway and Szell's men arrive, but Babe takes Elsa hostage. As one of Szell's men reaches for his gun he is shot by Babe, with Janeway joining in and shooting both of Szell's men. Janeway says that Szell's men couldn't be trusted and says he will give Szell in exchange for Doc. Elsa implores Babe to leave and as he does, Janeway shoots Elsa. Janeway is then shot by Babe.Attempting to determine the value of his diamonds, Szell visits an appraiser in the Diamond District in midtown Manhattan. A shop assistant who is also a Holocaust survivor believes he recognizes Szell as a war criminal. After Szell hurriedly leaves the shop, an elderly Jewish woman also recognizes him. Trying to cross the street to get closer to Szell, the woman is hit by a taxi, causing a crowd to assemble to aid her. Amid the confusion, the shop assistant appears again, directly confronting Szell, who then slits the man's throat.Szell retrieves his diamonds but, as he attempts to leave, Babe forces him at gunpoint into a water treatment plant in Central Park. Babe tells Szell he can keep as many diamonds as he can swallow. Szell initially refuses, and Babe throws handfuls of diamonds at Szell, which fall through the grating platform they're standing on and into the water below. Szell relents and swallows one diamond, but then refuses to cooperate further. When Szell brings up Babe's father and brother and accuses Babe of being weak and predictable and spits at him, Babe hits back but in the process loses his grip on the gun. Szell then reveals his dagger and lunges at him, but Babe manages to avoid it and throw the open briefcase with the remaining diamonds down the stairwell towards the water; Szell dives for them, but stumbles and rolls down the steps, fatally falling on his own knife blade. Babe heads out into Central Park, stopping to throw his gun into the reservoir.

Marathon scare!
I do not recommend this movie for anyone under 18 years old because it plays on the fears of the dentist drills and the use of dentistry as a method of torture. I can assure you some of the most severe pain I have ever had was the result of dental problems which most pain killing medications failed to stop the pain even the heavy stuff brought no relief. Even if you are older, as I am, the phase 'Is it safe?' seems to haunt me--especially when I am in need of dental care. As a drama thiller it is a very good movie but since I first saw it think that presently THE FIRM movie version was a better film with a stronger plot and it haunts the same ole stomping grounds of Grisham's other novels such as THE CLIENT. For its time; Marathon Man is a superb movie that not only plays on the fears of dentists but also of Nazi War Criminals who got away and those who hunt them down with a CIA and FBI twist with betrayals along the way. Dustin Hoffman at this time was basking in the glory glow of his success of Midnight Cowboy. Fact: Dustin accidentally was almost murdered in making of this movie because he wanted the drowing scene to look as real as possible by demanding that that hold him under as long as possible and he did many of his own charecter's stunts but had a stand in for some of the more dangerous ones. The location of this complex action movie takes place in New York City in Central Park, the city itself, as well as Columbia University and the Grad students apartment There are other out of city locations that include a lonely farmhouse. The movie story tells the tale of graduate student (Dustin Hoffman) working on his Doctorate degree at Columbia University along with the fact that his academic advisors know his parents and were in some cases very good friends of theirs. This relationship unstated fact that Dustin's charecter will graduate with his Doctorate degree simply because his father was a great intellectual and their friends. IT is aalso a vaguely hidden story variation of the Rosenburg children whose parents were executed for spying for Russia circa 1950(upon which also Angels in America is also based) as well as making use of Alfred Hitchcock's Classic movie 'Psycho' complete with variant shower scene except the victim is male and the predator is male and the playing up of a a sociopathic killer aka the Nazi Dentist.Fact:The Rosenburg Children have always believed that their parents were innocent but have had difficulty proving that but records, in both the US and Russia,if true, seem to indicate that they were very guilty. Movie Fiction: Due to a mistaken identity situation or confusing the graduate sttudent with another similar name---he gets mixed up with an Nazi war criminal (played by Sir Lawrence Olivier--one of his last films before dying) and a Jewish Diamond merchant who maintains a bank vault in which he keeps diamonds and other valuables. Thanks to driving an old clunker---a spectacular fire and explosion takes place when the Jewish Merchant gets into a road rage situation that leaves the victim and the outraged road rager dead. The plot thickens from there in which the Nazi comes into ownership of the diamonds and gets the grad student involved. Unkownst to the grad student his brother is very deeply involved in the entire plot but as result is killed off but dies in the Grad student's apartment. It makes use of a TV series Fantasy Island set's crows nest of the 1970s as the hide out for the Nazi criminal who is later recognized by a concentration victim---who screams STOP HIM STOP HIM! This being New York most people are aloof and ignore her or think she is some crazy lady and he goes free. The Movie ends inside the New York Waterwork near the Carillon in Central Park into which over a million dollars of diamonds are tosed into the drinking water of New Yorkers. Each man gets his due but we are not told if Hoffman's charecter ever gets his Phd although it is hinted that he does or will through a rather corrupt buddy buddy academic professor scheme of who you know but he does get his woman. This review has barely scratched the surface so see the movie--it is one of the finer thrillers of the 1970s.

When A Great Movie Plot Meets Superb Cinematography & Acting
Marathon Man is one of the best movies I've ever seen with regard to a focus on cinematography, film composition, screenwriting, acting, and film plot. The film plot is unpredictable and it kept me engage the entire movie. Also, the film characters are easy to cheer for and dislike, which makes for great film contrast. The film title properly correlates with the film's narrative and the main character's development and character arch. The film title also correlates with the supporting characters due to their role to play a marathon-like (slow manipulation game of 'cat-and-mouse' and deception on several fronts).I would recommend any would-be filmmaker to watch the Marathon Man to learn how a great film plot can complement superb cinematography. Also, if you're not a would-be filmmaker, I would recommend any movie-goer to watch the Marathon Man for sheer entertainment. This movie was filmed and produced in 1976 and it is still a great movie watch in 2023!

Dollar gekostet hatte.Das Bildformat ist 16:9 (Technicolor), der Ton Dolby Mono Surround Deutsch, Französisch, Italienisch, Spanisch, Portugiesisch, Englisch Dolby 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Keine Extras.
