Is the item easy to use?

No, it's pretty difficult. I ended up taking advanced courses in grill scraping so that I could properly use the item.

Is this safe to use on a ceramic grill grate (e.g., it will not scratch it)?

Brass bristled brushes are best for a ceramic or coated grill grates. Stainless steel bristles like these are too rough on the grates.

Do the metal strands fall out over time?

Yes, eventually short pieces of bristle start to fall out. For mine it took about 18 months using the grill 2 or 3 times per week. I replace it with exactly the same model when that happens, it works so good.

How well does this work on searing grates?

I use the Grillart Grill Brush while the grates are still warm, not necessarily searing.
