Great little bit of kit
My partner bought me this because I've been suffering with a herniated disc with nerve compression and so couldn't enjoy sitting in my PC chair to game at present.Using this little bit of kit I've been able to not only play on my PS5 while laid comfortably but also my Xbox and Steam games as well as some Google Play Store games. The buttons feel great to use albeit took a little getting used to if you're more accustomed to a PS5 controller. It easily fits my Samsung S23 Ultra although I do have to remove my case as mine is designed to combat my clumsiness and is therefore rather chunky. The app itself is a great addition to making things easier to switch between sources of games and took no time at all to set up.Due to my back issues I've not as yet been able to test this on the go but if you are like me and have a medical issue that affects your hobby this is a fantastic middle ground to help you out.

The only smart phone controller I use
I love this controller. It is the second one I’ve brought due to upgrading my phone it it having usb c. Love this controller. Well built and is plug and play. They do a subscription service for their app that unlocks some additional features. You do get 12 months free before you have to start paying but to be fair, I don’t use that and it’s not needed for you to use the controller. Overall a very good controller but appreciate it might be a bit pricey considering some other options out there.

Great Device. App is a scam.
The device itself is great. Feels great, looks great and the form factor is great. Perfectly portable and paired with a good game it is incredible how well it replicates the mobile gaming device feel. The app is a scam. The product description (and all the media adverts I have seen for the device) state that you can plug the device into a multitude of other devices via USB-C and use it as a controller with this devices. You can’t unfortunately. Not unless you pay £40 a year for the privilege through a Backbone+ subscription. This feels like a ridiculous thing to lock behind a subscription. It isn’t a service. It’s locking out hardware features. Hardware that has already been bought. There is nothing else in the subscription that justifies the cost either. They advertise chat and friends list (on a mobile device !?!? - those already exist on a phone, or can be downloaded for free through other, much more common and robust apps). They also advertise a months Xbox Gamepass or Apple Arcade subscription, but these are trials (that you’re actually paying Backbone for ?!?) and can be acquired for free through other means. Free trials are ten a penny.Great device. Shockingly scummy app monetisation. Four stars, simply because this is a review for the actual device.

Brilliant product
Initially, I was hesitant to purchase either the Steam Deck or this device. However, I am immensely pleased with my decision. The device’s powerful backbone is particularly advantageous for remote play games, and plane journeys will now be significantly more convenient.

Had three units develop the same fault.
I have had three of these now. The software is good and the device is brilliant when it works. The left side buttons slowly died off one by one. I even took it apart and had a look…nothing inside obvious to be repaired, just cheap components I guess.Customer service from Backbone is laborious and annoying. I don’t have a printer to print a return label and couldn’t be bothered schlepping to a relative with a printer and then a post office so after purchasing three in total, and spending a small fortune due to my own laziness and unwillingness to return and replace…I give up. Obviously partly my fault as I’m sure I could have jumped through hoops for a replacement but three faulty units is really disappointing.Got a Gamesir Galileo for cheaper and it feels just as good build quality (if not slightly sturdier) and it’s working as expected for the time being. It’s a shame.

Backbone Is great although a few small things you should know about
The controller is great and snaps onto basically any phone. I personally have the iPhone 13 myself and have a traditional apple phone case which I need to take of when snapping in the backbone. The first thing you should do is unbox it which should come with a manual, the backbone and a pair of smaller phone grips (for the minis) Attach your phone phone and the download the app backbone. After that It will take you through a couple steps to setup and then offer you a subscription. I believe the subscription is 45pounds annually. What this subscription does is give you access to things like Xbox live GeForce now etc. This subscription is OPTIONAL and you do not have to buy it to play games on your phone but will mean that you can’t play gt5 csgo2 etc without the subscription. This subscription is sadly hidden when you order and isn’t shown. I haven’t bought the subscription because I play Codm on my phone with this and don’t play pc games on my phone but if you want to you have to buy the subscription. The backbone is AMAZING QUALITY and the buttons feel great and tactile although the LT and RT are a little squishy but this doesn’t really impact gameplay. Overall I think the purchase is definitely worth it but do be warned about the 50 pound subscription. If you play App Store games with this make sure it says it supports console or just search it up. If you want pc games then you must buy the subscription.Thank you for reading
