Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

One of the best bedtime stories for little girls. We used to read to my kid when she was between 3-6. This also makes a quick bedtime read for older kids. Through these true stories my daughter got learn without realizing how the world changed for women over the time and the struggles sacrifices some had to make to achieve their accomplishments. This indirectly helped me make her aware of the value of freedom and privileges that girls get to enjoy in our current society and how precious it is, and to make sure that we move only forward. Totally recommend this for parents of little kids irrespective of their gender. This will also make a good gift.

Great book to read to your young or for her to read it herself as she gets a little older. Filled with inspirational stories about women throughout history.

This is an excellent choice for young readers and is also a lot of fun if you are teaching a young person to read. I have two 4 year old nieces who are not yet reading on their own, but they love having these stories read to them and they love the beautiful and creative illustrations of each woman or girl featured. I have learned a lot even I didn't know from reading this book to them. I love that it is instilling them with the awareness that women and girls have done important and critical work throughout time, all over the world. I feel confident that this is setting them up to be critical thinkers later on in life when they will likely encounter history classes that will only tell them what men in history have done. This book is very nicely put together. It is good and heavy with a heavy duty wipe-clean exterior finish. The interior bookplate sheet is especially nice if you are planning to give this as a gift, as I did. It also includes a ribbon bookmark to help little people find where they left off. I would absolutely recommend this book for all young children.

Grandma thought this was a great book for my 7 yr old granddaughter and after 6 stories about amazing women and amazing dreams , my son in law said “that’s an awesome book, Mom. Thank you” whether the child gets it for amazing feats of sports, politics or love, they will appreciate courage and women. I highly recommend this book for all ppl of all ages.

I purchased this book for my niece, and even though it is "for girls" I think this book would be an amazing book for any child, girl or boy. The stories in the book are empowering and thoughtful, and show that there are strong women throughout history. I think this book is absolutely wonderful. I think this book is wonderful for ANY child. The reason I say that, is for several reasons. It is true, boys and girls will take away different things from these stories. Yes, we need to empower our daughters, without question, and this book does that. But we also need to teach our sons that they should support girls and women of all ages. So even though this is Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, I think every child should read the stories in it. I'm planning on buying the second book in the series for my niece and this book for my nephews as well. On the artistic front, the art is phenomenal,I appreciate everything the book has to offer, artistically and historically. It is creative, colorful, beautifully illustrated, and I applaud the collaboration the was needed to make this book so unique. I hope they continue to make more of these books.

Having my nine year old read a couple to me each night and she is really enjoying the content. There are so many varied and interesting examples from around the world that the entries have sparked a lot of good conversation. Having said that, there was one entry we skipped over as I think it is very inappropriate for my daughter (not to mention the even younger readers who according to these reviews are reading). The book draws from more of a leftest cast rather than highlighting some likely candidates who were pioneers or achieved greatly but perhaps not according to the current in vogue view of "correctness." This leads to some interesting choices: Hillary Clinton but not Condolezza Rice; Ruth Bader Ginzburg but not the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court Sandra Day O'connor; no mention of Golda Meir. In fairness, Margaret Thatcher has an entry but her paragraphs include a line that "she wanted to take school lunches away from kids." Really. Also, the business sector is largely ignored. There are a lot of women entrepreneurs and business leaders who would be great examples for girls in our (still!) market economy. All in all I am glad I bought it. However, the book could have been a broader example set had were it less biased.

My 5 year old daughter likes the stories, and one page each person makes it easier for her to read herself. I brought the book to our Daisy Girl Scout troop meeting where they earned a badge about being courageous and strong. We started by playing Bold Maid (which I also recommend). Someone asked who Amelia Earhart was. My daughter grabbed the book and started reading her page! Then another girl wanted to read a page out loud! And two other girls wanted the book themselves! This book was a big hit for 5-7 year olds! During the troop meeting, the book and Bold Maid game prompted conversations about what world leaders like Angela Merkel do and how did Helen Keller walk around school if she was blind and deaf. The girls shared personal stories of how they got back up on their bikes or skates when they fell, and joined a t-ball team even though they were nervous. The meeting was a big hit! The book is awesome!

This book is awesome! I got it for my daughter's 7th birthday. We read a few stories at bedtime together. It was extra special because it started us talking about different things that happened to the women we read about. We ended up on YouTube listening to songs and interviews and talking about how she felt about them. She loved it so much she begged for me to leave the book with her and the light on so she could read more by herself. I would say this book isn't just for girls and women, but for anyone who wants to hear about women doing great or interesting things. Each bio is a page long and written in a way that's pretty easy for a young child to follow. Each page is accompanied by a beautiful portrait of the woman with a quote attributed to them. The portraits are unique to each woman, with no two sharing the exact same artistic style. Each portrait seems to capture the essence of the woman in some way. Don't expect it to be an in-depth bio of each person, but rather an overview or highlight inviting you to research more on your own if you are interested. It also covers quite the spectrum of ladies and from all walks of life - ballerinas, activists, pirates, tattoo artists, authors, astronomers, etc.

Great book! I thought that it might a bit difficult or boring for 7 year old, but opposite! She finally started to grow up from princess stories, looks for profession she wants, enjoys reading, one page story so short enough to keep interested, and always checks out pictures (seems to be important as for kid). Anyways, great and one of a kind!

Excelente livro!

There are good books, there are great books and then there our books which touch our lives in a very special ways. They tell stories which inspire us, make us happy, tales which we instantly connect with, stories which make us pick the book up again and again. Today, I'm writing about one such book which I recently came across. The title of the book was appealing enough for me to pick it up for my little Z. What I didn't know was that the stories in the book will touch my heart as much as they inspire my daughter. The book is called Goodnight stories for Rebel girls. It's written by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. It has illustrations by 60 female artists from across the globe. I made Z pick up her abosolute favorites and she did give me a long list after a lot of drama, according to her, "how can I pick only a few. I love all the stories." Anyway, her favorites include Margaret Hamilton, Brenda Chapman, Ann Makosinski, Coy Mathis, Maria Montessori, Jane Austen, Cleopatra, Julia Child, Simone Billes, Ashley Fiolek, Nelly Bly and Malala Yousafzai. I can't blame her for picking so many of them. The length of the stories, the illustrations, the narrative, everything is perfect. We have read these stories once and we are reading it once again... I know it definitely isn't the last time she is (sorry we are) reading it. I love the message in the beginning of the the book as well; "To the rebel girls of the world: Dream bigger, aim higher, fight harder, and when in doubt, remember you are right." I wish I had Goodnight stories for rebel girls, when I was a little girl.

Bellissimo libro. Come suggerisce il titolo sono delle storie della buonanotte, semplici e ciascuna che lascerà il lettore col pensiero che tutto è possibile nella vita. Scoperto grazie alla mia fidanzata, consiglio questo libro a chiunque. Il commento della mia ragazza è migliore di qualunque recensione: "Se avessi letto questo libro quando ero bambina la mia vita sarebbe stata diversa". Anche se questo libro insegna che si è mai troppo tardi per iniziare a fare le cose giuste. Buona lettura a tutti. Per coloro che abbiano apprezzato questo libro, forse può interessare anche un altro testo simile dal titolo "Getting There".
