To release one stick, you pull out the key, remove, then replace the key to stop any more falling off. I have emptied them all into the outer, which has a closure anyway. It seemed too much trouble to do each time. They don't seem to get tangled altogether, so no problem there.The actual gadget itself is effective, strong, yet gentle enough. The floss is thin and passes easily between my teeth and the plastic structure is not too large. They are definitely not sharp anywhere. I will buy again.
