will this work on a 5 gallon bucket for camping?

I do not think so. It is meant to go around the base of a toilet and a bucket would be too big and I think with a bucket it would be too high for it to be comfortable.

No box? the item was wrapped in a plastic bag with "squatty potty" logo on the outside of the bag. it did ship in the typical amazon brown box though.

When you buy these in the store they don’t come in a box. Company doesn’t provide one. Hope this helps.

Does the extra piece come off too easily while in use?

It stays securely & great for the 9” use. There is a cup indention it fits in. When is is stoutest under the seat, so you can use the 7” function, it can jiggle out & fall down if you are a little rough (in a hurry teens). But, this is great to really see what height you need, esp if you have a higher toilet, or thing you may want to start lower & work your way up or if there are small children to use also.
