is it actually clear or just a cloudy translucent look? I want to know if trowel lines would be visible.

I have not used this as a mortar behind tiles. I have used it as a grout between tiles and no lines are visible. To me it appears more translucent, picking up the colors of the tiles around it, so that it blends and disappears into the tile and is less noticeable than traditional grout.
