Hi, will this replace an out of date Ei144 heat detector without having to remove the base unit?

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can fit the new detector on the existing base unit - it worked for me, but you can always check with Aico, they're very good at answering questions.

how do you replace the battery

Remove the detector from the base and you will see the battery in the underside of it (mn1604b) unplug it from the connector and replace.
