Q: Is this all plain, ore the marks are carved?

The markings are very slightly engraved and colored on one side. The other side is plain wood grain. Both sides are usable.

Q: To save space could I put and use a Crock Pot on top of it?

The 1 inch rails grip onto the counter's edge to keep it in place, but it is not a separate counter top.

Q: What are the caring instructions?

Here are the care instructions that come with the board.1. When you first get your board, apply an even coat of mineral oil(available at Amazon, Bed Bath an Beyond etc as butcher block oil) this should be repeated every few weeks or when the surface looks dry. Do not use vegetable oil or oils from animal fats. Do not oil immediately after oiling! I oiled my board as soon as I got it, after use I oil after the board is clean and dry.2. Do not allow moisture of any kind stand on the board for long periods of time, as water has a tendency to raise the grain and make the surface rough.3. Use a good steel or plastic scraper to keep the surface clean (I prefer plastic). Never use a wire brush to clean the surface.4. To wash use a mild dish detergent and water,rinse thoroughly and dry with a paper towel. Never use harsh detergents or clean in a dishwasher.This board is easy to use and care for. Occasionally my board does get a little rough, I use a fine sheet of sandpaper to smooth it, then wash, rinse let dry and oil it. Please let me know if you have more questions.
