how do you change battery

It's now a tool free operation, you take off the white rubber, then twist open the battery compartment, very simple.

My last hrm broke. water got in from a crack and it corroded. need to replace the seal on this one? so it doesnt let water in??

The HRM Pro plus is suitable for water training and shouldnt corrode if properly cared for post workout (fresh water treatment after chlorine pool or saltwater). If your HRM that broke was an HRM pro plus and had its casing cracked somehow the i would assume you may need to replace or repair it.
