I have an old version (10 yrs maybe?) and it has a zippered compartment on the back that holds credit card/drivers license. Does this have that?

No it doesn't but there's a small front compartment and I use it for my license, credit card and even extra poop bags. It works out well for that.

actually I just got one and at max extension you only get about 40 inches... too small for me

Sounds very similar. The one in back is large - the width of the pouch - while the one in front is quite a bit smaller and closes with velcro.

Does the larger portion of the bag snap shut with metal or does it use velcro?

Snaps shut with metal. It has a great hing and was recommended by our trainer. I highly recommend it.
