Does this come with a gig bag?

At the time I purchased mine, it did not. I ordered a gig bag at the same time.

How floppy is the low/b string?

Not bad at all. I have two higher end Carvin 5 strings and the Ibanez is no worse. For the money you can' beat it, plus it saves you back being much lighter. Great for practice.

I notice that the tone knob/pot also acts like a volume knob. when turned down, the overall volume goes way down and vice versa. is this normal?

Yeah, the lower the tone the volume is effected. Depends on the Amp you use as well. I have the rumble 50 bass Amp and tuning the B string is a challenge if done by ear. I've played for 45 years and tune my 4 strings with ease. The lowest one always gave me problems

Can this bass be detuned to play heavy metal?

This is a short scale bass so you will need heavy gauge short scale strings.
