Good guide for using GPS devices for focused training
The book introduces PZI (Performance Zone Index) which allow you to take a recent race time and then look up what pace per mile you should be running different workouts at (with a nod to Jack Daniels running formula). For someone who has always been perpetually confused about what I should do for a tempo run, threshold run, easy run, marathon pace etc this finally makes it clear - personally for this reason alone I found the book worth it.The tables and TPZ system are based on performance times/effort in contrast to heart rate based systems like John Parker's Heart Rate Training for Compleat Idiots. Then armed with even a simple GPS device that shows current pace or mile splits this should enable a distance runner to improve (that's the theory - effort required, your results may vary). The book plugs Training Peak's WKO software heavily for managing total load and effort to come up with a complete running plan. The section on which GPS device is best useful but by the very nature of the tech cycle new GPS watch models have come out since the book was published.Overall it did convince me that a GPS watch is not just a nice gadget for measuring miles run but can be used to focus training effort.

Excellent guidance on using my Garmin 405
This book is pretty technical and there were a few parts I will have to go back and re-read, however it provides excellent insight on how to use the results from your Garmin (or Polar or whatever brand speed-HRM-distance device you use). I knew there had to be a way to use the data output to optimize training, I just figured it was only something the professionals would have time or understanding to do.Fitzgerald goes into great depth to explain how to calculate certain metrics, what they mean and how to use them to ascertain your strengths, weaknesses and where you are in your training. There seems to be quite a bit of promotion of the TrainingPeaks WKO+ software in the book, but after downloading the trial version and importing my last and current training cycles, the frequent references seem warranted. This is a good book for a self-coached runner with a Garmin 405, or an equivalent, looking to understand and boost their performance.

Excellent Info
As a runner with a few 5K's already on the books I found this book helpful in showing me the next steps to take. I'm not planning to be an extreme competitive runner and I'm certainly no elite, but there is a path to success here. At times it is complex and understanding all the formulas and pacing zones is tedious, but in the long run it will pay off. Great foundation. I look forward putting the information to the test.
