Yes it should , especially if it's bare wood . You most certainly will need more than one . If it is a complete table top you may want to think about a small can of stain .

Does this require a top coat after use?

I don't think it needs anything else, it dries with a soft glossy appearance. The directions do not anything about needing a top coat.

if being used on drink coaster, would i need to apply a sealer over this stain?

It has verithane in it , but when I used it I did add few coats of polyurethane.

Need to varnish after application?

Instructions do not indicate needing anything further. Very nice stain with applicator. Dries with a soft gloss.
