Midnight Magic: A Tarot Deck of Mushrooms

First, let me say that I am a huge fan of Sara Richard's art in general. When I saw this go on pre-sale it was an automatic buy, based on her alone. If Sara is illustrating something, I am buying it.I have always been drawn to her color choices, her sort of 'whimsical darkness' and the way she makes things feel simultaneously effervescent, with a tinge of the macabre. Her art, to me, feels like a waltz of color and nature and the cycles of life, coursing with chi/prana/energy in every swirl. Even when it dips into darker themes, it does so with a kind of warmth that makes said themes feel less frightening. This is something that I knew I would love when translated into a tarot deck.This deck is singular. Not only do the colors POP against the black background ( a personal favorite of mine- I love art on black backgrounds for this reason), but also you get so much more than mushrooms. The "Midnight" aspect of the deck shines through in every little creature, insect and twilight scene. It feels magical and cozy. With all of the little creatures it almost feels like you get bonus animal totems peppered throughout the cards.One of the extraordinary things about this deck is that the mushroom info is all BRILLIANT. I don't really know anything about mushrooms....but I have looked some of these up, based on which cards they appear on ....and let me tell you A LOT of thought went into this deck. Each species and their characteristics (or at least the ones that I looked up) is SO perfect for the traditional meaning and energy of the cards. It is like the traditional R-W deck leveled up. I really do mean brilliant. It can't have been easy to find this many specific mushrooms to fit each card's energy. It is arguably the first time that a tarot deck has also given me scientific information. I feel a mycologist could appreciate this, even if tarot wasn't their thing.I also like the fact that when doing a reading, when you pull one of those cards that normally gives you an immediate headache (looking at you Nine and Ten of Swords and The Tower) it doesn't sting quite as much. The way the art is presented, the colors and the beautiful natural imagery wrapped up in a cozy nighttime setting, softens the blow and allows you to focus on the meaning and energy of the card, without looking at someone who was, ya know, stabbed to death in the back ten times. lolSpeaking of backs....the backs of the cards are also noteworthy. It feels like a galaxy of mushrooms swirling into the cosmos...very meditative. I kind of want an animated swirly version of it as a screen saver. I included a photo of that here because I know it is important to some people. Having the contrast of colors on the back is also nice because when you turn them over, it is like opening a door to vibrant color.The fact that the mushrooms on the cards aren't just placed there in a static way, but placed IN the body positions of the traditional figures on traditional cards, is just such a cool small detail. It makes them feel dynamic and alive.My favorite tiny detail is the dragonfly wings as the infinity sign above the head of "The Magician". I don't know why this delights me so much, but it does.I feel this deck is really nice for the price. I won't lie....if they released a super fancy version of this deck, which I know can sometimes happen, (larger cards, foil accents, shiny stock)...I would definitely buy it again. It is the kind of deck that you bond with, big time.A must have for a tarot or mushroom enthusiast.Hopefully this was detailed in the right ways to help someone who is curious, and wanted info.

The media could not be loaded. These are the most beautiful deck I have ever laid eyes on! And I have been looking at cards for about 25 years over all! I bought it before they were released and I’m glad I did! The cards come with a book that gives a little explanation on the mushroom and 2 meanings , upright and and reversed. I can not explain how much my energy reanimates and loves these cards, I just received them and I came here to say GET THEM! You will not be disappointed. Cards are thick and of great quality they will definitely hold up for years to come. I read tarot when I was a kid and have long been wanting to start again. I have looked everywhere for a deck i resonated with eBay, Amazon, tons of shops and more places on line, none hit that spark inside like these the minute I saw them! I never want to put them down or have them away from me! Needless to say I’m in love! Each suit is represented on the corner with a flower so quickly you can tell what suit it belongs to. The major arcana don’t have a border just the beautiful mushroom carefully chooses to match the meaning. I don’t have a complete history on each mushroom but I can tell from the book if I did I would have a better understanding of each meaning. So it will be fun to learn about them as I go! I am not familiar with this artist or her name but she did an amazing job. I will keep my eyes out for any of her work in the future. 10/10 would definitely recommend. If your not sure maybe this isn’t the deck for you but I would buy them anyway lol

From the designs on the cards to the mushrooms, it's just so pretty.The cards are thick and sturdy, they feel really nice to hold and shuffle the box is sturdy and thick as well, (I really like how you can feel the words midnight magic). The designs of the mushrooms are just so perfect, each one feels like its own personal mushroom instead of a repeat oh and it has the names of the mushrooms too, a nice little treat. And let's not forget about the guidebook it comes with the guidebook itself is just as the deck nice and sturdy the information inside is easy to understand and read the words arent so small to the point where you cant read them.All in all a perfect tarot deck

I am ridiculously picky when it comes to the aesthetic and the messages portrayed in the artworks/symbolisms. These cards hit the mark on dark and spooky, whimsy and colorful, and it’s always a plus to actually learn something from these cards.Each card is a different fungi and each reading is based upon the looks, smells, purposes and biological markers that make each unique.I love how the suits are categorized in different color schemes so they’re easy to recognize. Much different than other decks I’ve had where they all have the same borders and color schemes.I just love how these came with a box and a guidebook also.My one complaint is the quality of the cards themselves. I thought they’d be thicker and more sturdy like a more modern deck. However, they have the same feel as a deck of playing cards. They’re more flimsy than I would’ve assumed, not very sturdy or thick. This does change the level of ease that they shuffle with- just as an fyi.
