I can hold a socket from turning easily with my hand, did I receive a defective tool?

Could be defective but I used an electric impact at my old job a lot and you could keep it from spinning by hand. Your skin is stretchy so it absorbs the impact and springs back. You sometimes get the same issue if you are trying to loosen bolts that are rubber mounted.

Most impact wrenches in this category have around 250 lb-ft of torque. This unit puts out 450 lb-ft of torque. If you don't have high quality impact sockets they can break under high torque usage. Next time try spraying the bolt with a penetrating catalyst like PB Blaster and wait around five minutes to let it work and you may have more success at removing stubborn bolts.
