Does this need calibrating? (easy&better results i understand) but does it work to decent accuracy without?measuring rugs/shelves so 1/2 mm out is ok

As an architect I use it to measure distance of rooms etc. you can set it to mm however it works with a beam of light so you need to place it on one wall or other surface , hold it steady and the beam will provide the dimension in mm but you have to press a button. This means it can vibrate thus you may have a little distortion in the dimension. My use is + - 10 mm so no issue. Not perfect but inexpensive and is easy to use

Can it pin point set distance or measure eg where 50cm is along a plank of wood

You have got to be able to point the laser at something so you can't do this directly. However, if you move a flat surface at right angles to the piece of wood and measure by placing the Measure device on end of the wood and point it at the flat surface, where the flat surface face meets the wood is the distance on the device.

Is it build in battery or 2 AAA batteries required?

It needs 2 AAA cells. There are two included.

can it display distance in milimeters

Yes.. It shows in m but in reality it is the same result eg it reads 2.833m so 2833mm or to domonstrate on smaller distance.. 0.233m so 233mm
