Little Giant CFST, 5 Amp, 115/230 Volt, 50/60 Hz Pump Down Control Float Switch for use with Control Panels with or without an Alarm, 20-Foot Lead Wires (Plugless), Black, 950267

I have a 20 year old Orenco float-switch system in my septic tank that triggers a contactor, which runs a pump, that pumps liquid to the sand filter. One of the three mercury switch floats went bad and had to be replaced but you can not get mercury switch floats anymore. This Little Giant mechanical switch was the perfect replacement. The 20' lead cable was more than enough and I cut it shorter to match the length of the wiring harness with the other two floats. I was surprised that it came with a yellow band on the neck as there was no indication in the description that it would ship with a color band. I was expecting it to be all black like the picture. Not a big deal, although in my system yellow would indicate the High Level Alarm, and given the choice, I would have picked red since I'm using it for the Pump Off float replacement. No big deal though and it makes it easier to see when in operation. I wanted a float that had the UL safety approval and this one does. The cheaper floats did not specify any agency approvals. The construction of the float, and the cabling, feel like a quality product. The installation was easy. I followed the spec and left a minimum of 3" of tether length (actually did 3.5"). I did not need the included strap since it was going into the existing Orenco clamps. I did purchase waterproof wire nuts for the installation. I am very pleased with this repair job and how well this Little Giant float switch seamlessly installed into my old system. It has now been running for several weeks without issue. Note that this float switch is not rated for running the pump, it is rated for running the contactor that runs the pump.

Little Giant CFST 115/230 Volt Control Float Switch I used this pump float as a replacement alarm control float switch on an existing alarm box. So the amperage rating on the float is unimportant. Now if you are going to try and use this switch to directly control a pump’s operation, then the amperage matters because the wiring on the pump float needs to be able to handle the amperage of the pump. For example a 1/2 horsepower pump can pull 12+ amps. So I do not think this should be wired into the operating voltage of a pump. It should be used with control panels or alarm boxes. Other pump floats can be purchased with a piggyback plug that are rated for direct pump amperage.
