Q: Can these be used to drill through aluminum?

I’ve used them to drill aluminum, 4130, and titanium without problems.

Q: Why are these bits 118 degrees instead of 135 degrees which is the industry standard for drilling through metal?

You could be mistaken, 118 deg is standard for metal drilling on twist drills up to 1” in diameter. 140 deg is often used on 1inch and larger twist drills. Refer to Machinists Handbook, 29th Edition, pg 894 and or the section on twist drills under “Cutting Tools”. In my 50 plus yrs working in precision machining industry, we always sharpened our twist drills to 118 to 120 degrees point angle. for drilling steel and Alum. I’m Hope this helps.
