Pencil Drawing Techniques: Learn How to Master Pencil Working Techniques to Create Your Own Successful Drawings

A Great Book for Learning to Draw Realistic Textures, Landscapes, Animals and Use Watercolor Pencils! Packed with Information!
I love this book! I have purchased about eight drawing books and painting books in the last month and have just finished teaching the book, Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner, which is great it if you have never drawn before but it didn't go enough into detail on techniques as I would have liked so I bought Pencil Drawing Techniques as a second level book. I would not call this a book for beginning artists but it had way more detail on techniques than several of the other books I read. I have read this book thoroughly from cover to cover but have not done the exercises yet. The book covers an immense amount of topics which makes it well worth the price! Too many art books I checked out were skimpy on actual drawing instruction. It had great explanations for how to draw landscape drawings--both textures--and how to simplify or add interest to what you see so you have an interesting composition. The book has a good section on techniques at the front. The chapter on how to draw for watercoloring was the least informative, but the section how to use water color pencils was incredible! I'm a new artist so it seemed, in my inexpert opinion that the style of sketching is a little old-fashioned, but I can't wait to work through the whole book! I wouldn't call this a first book for beginners, but it's great for those who want to develop their skills more. I especially loved the part on textures for landscapes too. I am teaching an art class and was looking for a book to take us to the next level and feel that with our several months of drawing background using 'how to draw what you see' from Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner, that Pencil Drawing Techiniques will fit our needs perfectly.

Very helpful
I have dabbled with pencil drawing for years. I really don't spend the kind of time I should to become really good at drawing, but I enjoy what I create. My primary need to draw is to put on paper ideas I think about to see if the idea is practical, for example building a deck. By drawing first, I can include special innovations that I can't find in pictures or drawings I find in magazines. I try to make my drawings as realistic looking a I can.I have several drawing books that I have accumulated over the years. Many of the books follow the same outline. For example , start with the tool needed to draw, discuss shapes, discuss shading, then perspective. The books then include drawings the author created or borrowed from others. I try to copy drawings from the book to sharpen my skills. This book had many drawings I hadn't seen before. Also the narrative by this author was somewhat different than other books I have seen. The author describes techniques in a way I haven't heard before which makes me aware of things I might otherwise miss.I'm still reading and learning.

BUY THIS BOOK FIRST to learn pencil drawing - also has a great section on using colored pencils
If you want to learn pencil drawing, THIS IS THE BOOK TO BUY. David Lewis has provided absolutely excellent instructions and exercises, along with LOTS of great examples, on how to achieve every possible texture you'll ever need, including skin tones/shadow, fur, water/surf, clouds, grass, etc., etc., etc. It shows which graphite hardnesses will produce which textures and effects and also has a excellent introductory sections on basic drawing (perspective, proportion, etc.).I wish I had bought this book first, it would've saved me a lot of money. It also has a section on using colored pencils, too, which I didn't realize the book contained but was delighted to discover. I feel like I got a "bonus" book with this purchase.

Get it !
“Pencil Drawing Techniques” edited by David Lewis This is a very straightforward instruction book covering a wide range of useful topics and I find myself coming back to it on a fairly regular basis. I think the editor did a great job in selecting writings and writings that are really high-quality – much more readable and useful than a lot of what passes for drawing instruction today. This is one of my “don't lend to anybody” books

My childhood
I practiced using this book when I was 10. Went with my parents to the bookstore and I asked him to buy it. Now I'm 26 and this book is still a masterpiece.

Drawing
I am using PENCIL DRAWING TECHIQUES in a drawing class. It is excellent in every aspect. I am using it through the guidance of an art teacher, but find it an excellent source to learn drawing, shading etc. We have used it chapter by chapter. I feel that you could teach yourself by following the illustrations in it.
