Can I use this as a leave in conditioner?

Yes. You can! I have use as a leave in conditioner

do you wash hair first, then apply? Or do you apply first, wash afterwards? Do you apply to wet or dry hair? Directions confusing

Wash hair first, then condition with this from 5-10 minutes. This is a very nice conditioner. I have relaxed 4b AA hair. It works great for me.

How does this work in black men’s hair?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work in black men's hair. I am a white female that has dry color treated hair. I don't use it every day because it can tend to weigh down thin hair. If you have short hair use a dime size amount and thoroughly rinse your hair. This also comes in a shampoo.
