How is this better than a piece of 2X4 wood?

When using for a hinged door, a 2x4 is ok if used on carpeting. Nails or screws can be used at the top in place of the yoke. The top of the wood and the nails can be wrapped with tape to keep from scratching surfaces. However, a 2x4 doesn't work very well on tile or wood flooring. A strip of rubber would need to be attached to keep it from sliding. A 2x4 also isn't very appealing to the eye... if that is important. All in all... for $19, this product offers some versatility (hinged doors or sliders), comes with a detachable yoke (instead of using nails or screws), and is more appealing to the eye.

Does this work when the outside door is the sliding door?

NOTICE: If it isn't a poor design issue, your doors sound like they are on the tracks backwards. I'd contact the manufacturer and discuss this issue. The outside door could be lifted off the tracks from the outside and someone could walk in. Very dangerous.
