Is this the same unit you get from AT&T?

Yes. They custom brand it. This has the ATT brand

This is proprietary won't wrk with spectrum?

I hooked this up to my ATT router with no issues. It is not proprietary to ATT. The documentation lists many routers. Google your router part number to find out if it would work for you.

B/c of issues with an lg smarttv, i need to keep my 2.4 and 5.0 bands separate - will this extender do that?

Yep, it sure will and more with the AT&T Home App it works flawlessly. I have a VIZIO Smart TV on my 2.4ghz band and My Nvidia Shield TV Pro operating on 5ghz in my living room. With fiber wireless to this router/extender at about 80 Ft from main fiber hub I still get blazing fast speed with no lag. Outstanding little box for AT&T fiber internet....
