Cloak and Dagger: Shadows and Light

Good intro to Cloak and Dagger
Cloak and Dagger made their first appearance in Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 when they killed Simon Marshall who created new drugs that were tested on runaway children taken in by the Mob. That showed how the new duo were going to be different from the regular Marvel team as killing wasn’t usually part of the company’s comics. Cloak and Dagger were test subjects of these new drugs and rather than dying like all the other teens they were given special powers. Getting revenge upon the mob that used them as guinea pigs and protecting other kids from the evils of criminals became their calling card. That would bring them in contact with Spider-Man who thought they were misguided youths, the crazed Silvermane cyborg, Kingpin and the Punisher.Their success in the Spider-Man series would get the duo their own short-lived comic in 1983. That would introduce some new storylines. The couple were still trying to save the children, and had taken up in a church where the priest Father Francis believed that Dagger needed saving from Cloak, and a local detective O’Reilly believed the duo were interlopers. After that there were a hodgepodge of comics that featured Cloak and Dagger including more Spider-Man issues and the New Mutants. The last had just horrible drawings Bill Sienkiewcz with no sharp edges and tons of shadow that made it look like a sketch, not a final product and too much text by Chris Claremont.Until Cloak and Dagger got their own TV show recently the couple were one of many forgotten comics. This is a good collection to get introduced to them and the stories are good until the New Mutants comics.

Should be a Marvel Epic
If you are a fan of marvel epic format don't let this book pass you by. It's basically a marvel epic collecting all the early appearance of Cloak and Dagger. I hope marvel continues to collect their appearance and do a volume 3 and above.

The writing in this was great, and the art was bleak in a Sandman ...
Most of my recollection of this comic book title was the influence held over a pubescent me by Marvel’s barest attempt at a costume on Dagger. Since this title is getting adapted for television, I figured this assembly was worth a read. Now that I am done, I am not sure I can agree with that prior optimistic assessment. The one real saving grace was the final New Mutants storyline. The writing in this was great, and the art was bleak in a Sandman sort of way. If you pick this up at all, I would skip straight to the end and just read these three issues. In the middle of reading, I set this aside for a bit, as the Punisher sequence left a bad taste in my mouth. Frank Castle was presented really far off from his core (shooting at people committing misdemeanors like traffic violations - this is just ridiculous in a Big Shot from The Tick sort of fashion). Many of the storylines read like a DARE comic. Characters were flat. The priest was particularly flaccid, and he had so much promise since this book really had a look and feel like Moore’s Swamp Thing run. The detective almost has nuance and depth, but all we received was inconsistency. With the format of this compilation we also got repetition, where we were re-introduced to the characters and their origins in storyline after storyline. Here’s hoping that the adaptation of this title gets even half the magic they pulled out for the previously D-List Guardians of the Galaxy.

Great introduction
Cloak and Dagger are two of Marvel's lesser-known heroes. Despite this they are no less intriguing or entertaining than any of their more mainstream peers. This volume contains all of their earliest appearances, including their origin story. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the characters themselves.
