Can I use an exhaust manifold without having to use a high temperature primer?

Yes, I did and it looks as good 6 months later as when I brushed it on. Prep the manifold with an abrasive 3M pad or similar product before coating.

Should I use metal prep on exhaust pipes before painting with high temp paint

This is what my husband said: yes. Or, he can sand the rust away, but the surface should always be paint-ready.
