"Clicking with Your Dog" is the answer for all pet owners who want a dog to be a real partner and friend. The author's step-by-step illustrations explain the clicking process more clearly than ever before. Soon you will truly understand your dog, and, thanks to the clicker, your dog will understandd you!" Review: I Only Wish I'd Written It! - The ideal training guide for everyone; especially those who don't have time or interest to sit down and pour through long blocks of text, or highly technical writing. Tillman's clear, concise, easy-to-follow illustrations make comprehension a snap, for every type of learner. This is the book my students find the easiest to follow, and it's absolutely marvelous for children. Feedback from dog training students I mentor worldwide consistently note that the book's presentation style makes it impossible to put down. Because each chapter can be read individually, those who like to "skip around" instead of reading from beginning to end will still find it simple to follow the step-by-step directions. The pictures are clutter-free, elegant and simple, helping the reader focus easily on the behavior being shown. One example of its effectiveness is how accessible it is for those with learning disabilities. My husband, severely dyslexic, cannot read blocks of text without great difficulty. Yet, I was able to randomly open the book, give him a clicker and treats, and watch him "shape" the behavior just by following the illustrations. He didn't need to read any of the accompanying text (which is concise, without a wasted word) in order to get the behavior from the dog. Students with Attention Deficit Disorder find Tillman's book to be a guide written just for them: it moves so quickly, is so simple and easy to follow, that there is no time to get bored, no time for the mind to wander. ADHD students who have never been able to make it through other fine training guides seem to relish Tillman's book from beginning to end. It's just plum FUN. Tillman's message all the way through the book is that training a dog should not be stressful for the dog or the human, but a dance of joy, fun every step of the way. Of all the books I have recommended over the years, this is the book I am wildly enthusiastic about, as it opens up the science of shaping behavior to the casual pet owner as well as the serious performance enthusiast. Void of techical terminology that sometimes confuses those just learning how to clicker train, Tillman present science in a way anyone can understand--have a darned good time, to boot! Tillman not only addresses teaching all the basic behaviors for "good manners," but shows how to solve behavior problems without resorting to force, coercion and pain. How effective do I think Tillman's information is? With the information presented in this book, I was able to turn around a fear-agressive dog who went on to win the National Service Dog of the Year award, as well as become a certified therapy dog. When traditional correction-based training only made his problem behaviors worse, it was following the guidelines Tillman offers that saved this dog's life and helped him become such a phenomenal service dog, therapy dog, school demo dog and marvelous, loving companion. And, he was the first toy breed service dog to help carry the 2002 Winter Olympic Torch! Buy the book. Give it away to friends who have dogs with problem behaviors. Buy it for yourself, your kids, for people who are frustrated in their attempts to change unwanted behaviors into wanted responses. It works. Oh, does it work! Review: Fast training with this fun book - I got this book with my new puppy and was tremendously impressed with how fast she learned to do things. It works great to tell her when she is doing the right thing. I wore my clicker attached to my belt loop all of the time when she was young but only take it out now when I want to try to teach a new trick (She is now 2 years old). She perks up immediately because she has learned how to learn and that learning new things is fun. People are always impressed when she picks up her toys and returns them to the basket. She can weave through my legs as I walk, go in reverse, spin, play dead, and do all of the standard things like go to her mat, sit, beg, lie down, roll over, open a door, and many other things. This book works mainly by drawings so you know right away what to do. I loved it and sent a copy to my nephew as soon as I heard he had gotten a puppy. If you want more words and background information, then buy The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs . I would start with Clicking with Your Dog first or get both at the same time.

Well Worth it!! Solved few of my dog's problem behaviours too!!
I really can't stress enough how impressed I am with this book. It actually came recommended by my veterinarian, so my expectations were high.. but I was surprised by how well it worked! Our dog pulls on the leash when we take him out for walks (we bought a gentle leader harness and he still pulls!), jumps on people, and our dog barks. Barks. Barks. Barks. I followed the tips from this book, and in two weeks I have seen SOOO much improvement. I mean, we still have a little way to go (he's not 100% but he's so close!), but I've been training this dog for months and to suddenly see so much improvement in the last two weeks is just so promising to me. Plus, there are hundreds of just tips and training gems, and even just tips to keep a happy and healthy dog.. stuff I wasn't expecting to find in just a training book, there is just SOOO much information packed into this book. They condense everything down so you read exactly what you need to know, and I'm someone who really studies the training of dogs and dog health, I'm not new to this field at all. I give it 4 stars. Please don't give your dog raisins, might just be an illustration flaw. But aside that, I really have to say, this is one of the BEST training books I have.

Excellent "how to clicker train a dog" book
this book is one of my favorite basics, and i recommend it as a staple for anyone interested in training pet dogs in a positive, effective way. it is very practically written, straight-forward, and easy to understand regardless of education level and training experience. Additionally, the illustrations make it very comprehensible and the instructions easy to follow. have purchased it multiple times just to give it to colleagues and co-workers so they can improve their clicker skills. i even occasionally refer back to it for ideas on how to deal with problems training or trick ideas. just a great basic all around staple for any good clicker trainers shelf, and always on my list of recommended reading.

Great intro to clicker training!
We just adopted an 8 week old Airedale Terrier puppy 3 weeks ago. I'd heard about clicker training and had read Karen Prior's book "Reaching the Animal Mind," but this was our first attempt at clicker training. I highly recommend Peggy Tillman's book "Clicking with Your Dog" for anyone who wants to try clicker training their dog. We've been working with our pup since we brought him home about 3 weeks ago. It's amazing how quickly he picked up on the clicker training. He loves playing "the clicker game." It's really cute to see him come up and sit down, lie down, shake hands, and even walk away and come back again ("come") to try to get me to click and treat. The book is written very simply and has lots of pictures and captions for those who just want to scan and start. I read the book and have been referring back to the various sections often whenever I want to teach our pup a new skill. The book has been invaluable, and due to how quickly our pup has been learning, I'm sold on the methodology as well.

Not For All Dogs Or Situations
First to those who think your dog will get over weight on clicker training. It is very simple to measure out their next feeding and take the "treats" from there. I determined that the clicker method would not work with the dog that I had just acquired. His attention span was a nanosecond! First thing I discovered is he had never had a real hands on relation with a human before. So all training stopped until he got to the point of being petted and groomed. Next I determined that he did know some commands; sit, stay, down. These commands were reinforced again by contact and praise. When I teach him a new command I do use the clicker until he pays attention, then immediately turn to praise. Please do not get "locked" into one type of training and never try to train a vicious dog. Either get rid of him or take him to a professional trainer. Perhaps I would have had better luck with the clicker method if I had gotten this dog as a small pup. However, he came to me as a 5 month old black lab, weighing 70 pounds of pure energy. Please maintain flexibility in your training method. Sometimes we have to be smarter than the dog (G).

EXCELLENT!
I recently ordered and received Clicking with your Dog, Clicker Training for Obedience, Fun and Games with Dogs, More Fun and Games with Dogs, and 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step... Of these six books, Clicking with Your Dog is my favorite because the text is easy to follow and the very abundant illustrations are very clear and self-explanatory. There are sections on teaching "Manners" (being well-behaved), "Practical Skills", "Useful Tricks and Games", as well as others. The book is well organized. When this book arrived, the glue in the binding wasn't holding some of the pages right, so I spoke to an Amazon rep. who e-mailed to me a prepaid UPS label to return the book in exchange for a substitute. The same day (today)that Amazon received the defective book, I received the replacement. You can't ask for service better than that. I rate it 5 stars for the book and 5 stars for Amazon.

Super clear and easy to grasp
I have had this book for over a year, when I adopted my Golden puppy. I did some clicker training with him, as well as, went to a clicker training class. But I found clicker training confusing sometimes, and I didn't understand the benefits and "rules" clearly. I have just finished rereading this book and have had a lot of "aha" moments. I wish I had tried a bit harder to figure it out, because I am now applying these exercises with amazing results. I have been lucky my Golden often helps me out and meets me halfway when we train together. Thankfully, with my better understanding, I hope I will not confuse myself and my new addition to the family: a Brittany puppy. This is a great beginning book! Super clear and easy to grasp!

I really enjoy reading this book so far
I really enjoy reading this book so far! The instructions are very easy to follow, and they give multiple methods to many of the clicker tricks that are taught. The simplicity of this book is what really makes it worth it. I was able to read it in about 2-3 hours, and I now feel comfortable going back to specific tricks that I recall and want to use with my dog.
