i use a large 3m hook (something like http://www.amazon.com/Command-Large-Plastic-Hooks-3-Hook/dp/B000M3V8XI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408949808&sr=8-3&keywords=3m+hooks) it has held up perfectly. i hang it on the wall opposite of the shower. so you can still shower. it's completely out of the way

That’s a bit much, I don’t think so. A thirteen year old will be too big for it.

What is the drain plug made of? And could it scratch my baby's arms if he is highly active during bath time?

Rubbery plastic and won't scratch. My 10 month old is super active and just now noticed the plug- its tucked in a corner where the baby doesnt really go.
