A collection of six short stories and one novella from the influential Russian novelist The Gambler and Other Stories is Fyodor Dostoyevsky's collection of stories reflecting his own life—indeed, "The Gambler," a story of a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general, was written under a strict deadline so he could pay off his roulette debts. This volume also includes "Bobok," the tale of a frustrated writer visiting a cemetery and enjoying the gossip of the dead; "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man," the story of one man's plan to commit suicide and the troubling dream that follows, as well as "A Christmas Party and a Wedding," "A Nasty Story" and "The Meek One." Review: Superb Dostoyevsky translation, great stories, helpful annotations - This is a book which I highly recommend. The translation is robust and readable and enjoyable. The best translation of Dostoyevsky I've ever read. I wish this translator had more available, I'd buy it all. The stories are excellent. The standouts are the title selection—which features a love story gone sideways in a manner that will seem bizarre to some and all-too-familiar to persons such as myself, and is a masterful gambling allegory—and a humorous farce in which the head of a government department crashes the wedding party of a clerk from his office, and in spite of having the best intentions, turns the entire affair into a monumental disaster. The book also has footnoted annotations which are erudite and helpful, especially for this American who has never visited Russia and needed to be schooled on some or the basics of Russian culture. Review: Old book - Great book. Quite dark.

Close to original text
I’m always impressed by Wilks command of the language, keeps many of the known stylistic nuances of Dostoevsky (use of repetition, use of Russian folk terms, informal to formal shifts in language) while nonetheless making a very readable contemporary edition. Excellent footnote as in other translations by Wilks.

Granny gone wild
Granny tells her family to go to hell because she thinks they’re only after her money. Then she goes to the Casino and quickly gets addicted to roulette. Her nephew tries to dissuade her from gambling away the family fortune by telling her she should go hiking with him and enjoy the beautiful view from the top of the mountain; she looks at him like he’s crazy and tells him to shove that beautiful view up his ass.

I love Dostoyevsky. Reading this book just emerged into the story. I won’t spoil it too much just pick it up and read it yourself.

A Great Collection of Wonderful Stories
This is the first work of Dostoevsky's translated by Meyer that I have read. The only writing in this collection that I had not read previously was A Nasty Business, and it was a gem of a story. It is worth buying this collection for that story alone; but if his translation here is any indication, the other works (The Gambler, White Nights), which are magnificent, will also be well served by this able translator. Dostoevsky is the GOAT

Great
It’s a great. Contains two of my favourite short stories by Dostoyevsky. The Gambler and A Nasty Business. They are both 10/10. Highly recommended you read them. White Nights is one of his weakest in my opinion but they are all worth a read.
