No, this belt should not be trimmed.

Is the 40 inch size of this belt really 1.8 inches wide or is it 1 inch wider?

I measured it at 1 1/4 inches. I can't imagine where you could use a belt 1.8 or 2.8 inches wide. I know it shows on the site as 1.8 inches, but it's not!!

the 42 size is how many cms i bought the 38 and it is very short should i buy 42 or 44?

Size 38 measures 48.5 inches not including the buckle. It is 42.5 inches to the middle hole not including the buckle. Each size up adds approximately 2 inches.
