Its effective to some degree...
I have a 35-40 lb mixed breed dog that I got from a shelter. They say he is a mix between a portuguese sheepdog and a schnauzer. Whatever he is, he seems to inhale his food, it takes him like 30 seconds to eat a cup of dog food. The dog trainer recommended him I get one of those balls he has to knock around to get his food. I got this one StarMark Bob-A-Lot Interactive Pet Toy, Large . He likes that one and it definitely slows him down and entertains him. The only thing is that I get home late at night and feeding him with this then wakes up the whole house because he bangs it around and hits the cabinets, leg chairs, etc.I needed something quieter and found this. I got a medium. It looks nice, good quality, sturdy. It doesn't get knocked over, he can't carry it around and gnaw at it like his other dog bowls. But as far as slowing him down, it slows him down a little, it now takes him like 1 min. He can get into it pretty easily. Either way, its still a nice bowl, I've had it over a year and still looks great. I consider it a good investment. What has helped some is that my friend kept him for over a week while I went out of town. What he would do is that when he gave the command to eat, and my dog started scarfing down his food, he would remove the bowl, give him a little bit, wait for him to eat. He would do that every time. At least thats what he said he did, for all I know he beat him into it, but whatever he did worked because now he actually takes a few minutes to eat and you can actually hear him crunching away at his food.

Slows down fat, farting dogs and quietly establishes dominance
This would've been a 5 star review, but my toddler was able to remove the rubber gasket too easily. It's easy to replace, so it is a solid 4 in my book. If the rubber on the bottom were a tighter fit, I'd give it a 5.That being said, my Chug (Chihuahua/Pug mix) is a total fatty. Seriously, she looks like she played for the Dallas cowboys in the 90's. That being said, I love my dog. She's the best cat I've ever had. (Chugs are total lap dogs and have a problem with authority and with change.) This bowl ticked her off initially. She didn't eat for two days, out of protest. (Yet found time and energy to snuff every square inch of my 874 square foot apartment for morsels of food, even though I placed this bowl in the EXACT SAME SPOT as her last food bowl!) I digress... When she finally gave in and ate her food out of this dish, she was forced to slow down and actually taste her food. This has had the added benefit of reducing the odious scent of dog farts wafting in the breeze as well. I hadn't realized her quick eating caused so much gas. Maybe I need one of these for my husband to use on chili night? To sum it up: buy this product. Your happy home depends on it.

A good looking bowl that does what it's supposed to as well!
The media could not be loaded. When we got our GSD (German Shepherd Dog) puppy at 10 weeks I would have described him as a voracious eater. By 12 weeks it was no longer amusing as I know of the propensity for bloat in this breed so I looked up ways to slow him down. He'd push balls out of his food so that was a no-go, but then I found the whole array of slow-feed bowls. I chose this one because I like the look of it. I bought this one and one of the plastic ones to go with it with a different design. Both of the bowls slow him down but he liked to tip the plastic one so we've stuck this using this one. He's gone from eating his food in 30 seconds to just about 2 minutes. He's also chewing which is a good thing, something he seemed to have lived without before. He's tried to tip this to no avail. Also he's slowed down in general taking treats, could be from this bowl or from getting a little more mature. In all, the bowl works great and looks good. It's was hilarious the first few days the way he would run around the bowl trying to catch the food, since then he's taking to laying down, maybe it gives him a better angle. Either way, as he grows his snout should grow too, maybe that will slow him down even more. Some specs on the video:Large size bowl containing 2 1/4 cup of dog food. 14 week old GSD. Watch him eat beginning to end with no commentary or anything, pretty boring but might make you decide to buy this bowl or forget it.Edit: Edited to match comments for clarity. Also, now that he's grown it has slowed him down even more with his larger face. Still love the bowl and it's still in great condition!

Works great, but not exactly non-skid
I liked this better than most, but one of my three dogs literally goes nuts and tries to eat her food in three bites. She is a larger breed and I am afraid of bloat, so I decided to try this bowl. My dog is smart, so the other bowls discouraging fast eating with different patterns just got knocked over by her and she ate the food off of the floor. She cannot tip this bowl, even if it falls off of her bed and is tilted in her kennel. I did deduct a star because the blue plastic at the bottom is cheap and awful, and ended up in the trash. If they spent a little more and gave it a thicker rubber piece, this could easily be a 5 star bowl.I throw it in the dishwasher on the bottom rack once a week, and no issues. It slows the dog down by far, like it literally probably takes her three times as long to eat. It is still fast, but much better than it was when she ate out of a regular bowl.

Exactly What We Needed
My young cat, who we recently adopted, is completely food-obsessed. Since we brought her home she immediately pounces on whatever food is offered, gulping it down so quickly that I was concerned she would just vomit it right up. I knew it wasn't healthy for her to be gulping it down so very quickly. We purchased this bowl in the small size and it has worked wonders! Previously she would be done eating before our dogs even began their meals and then would then stalk their bowls for more food. Tonight, the dogs were all finished their meals by the time she was about half way through hers. I highly recommend this bowl as it has done exactly what we were looking for it to do!

It Works!
Good quality. Bought for our cat.Instead of gobbling the entire bowl of food in a minute flat, he now eats a little, leaves food in the bowl, and comes back to the dish over time to eat the rest. The bowl is probably more suitable as a dog bowl... even though it says it's small it's pretty big. About twice the size of the average cat bowl.

Not as described...
I received this dish today but it did not come with the non-skid ring as pictured. The UPC label on this item (which had been covered with a blank label) describes the item as, "Large Slow Feeding Dish w/ Blue Silcon Bonded Ring (1320)". Since the UPC label was intentionally covered then I would suggest that the incorrect description was also intentional...not impressed.

Does the job
I bought this dish because I wanted my dog to see his kibble slower and it actually worked. Instead of finishing h is food in seconds, it now takes him approximately 5 mins. The only thing I do not like about the dish is that it skids a bit. Other than that, I am very happy with this purchase. It does the job and the quality is very good.

Works great!
Our dog is part beagle and is obsessed with food, she would eat herself to death if she could. This dish definitely slowed her down tremendously. She has frequently vomited after eating due to eating to quickly but hasn't since we bought this dish for her.Definitely would recommend!
