For a negative-grounded vehicle (modern industry standard), connect the positive (red) clamp to the positive post of the battery and then connect the negative (black) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block.

With the device off, plug the 12V DC device into the DC power outlet. Then turn on the 12V DC device (if required). To use the USB port, press the USB button and plug the device into the USB port. Then turn the USB device on.
