Thin and Lightweight, but Warm
I was surprised at how thin the shemagh was when it arrived, but after perfecting how to put it on I was surprised at how warm it became. I brought it along backpacking at Glacier National Park in early May where I really learned just how useful it was. Glacier in May is still very cold, it dipped below zero every night and snowed a few times while we were up there. When the sun disappears behind the mountains the temperature drops. I most often wore it around my neck while still tied in the configuration that I could pull it over as a hood and around my mouth as a mask. When tied like that it provides excellent insulation (hot or cold) and just feels really good. The cotton almost feels like fleece. I often wear it like that for a majority of the day at my cabin. When you have the mask around your face it blocks wind as well as any single-purpose mask you could ever buy. However, I wear glasses and often those single-purpose thinsulate or any other material masks always, always cause my breath to fog my glasses. I've never had my glasses fog up wearing my Shemagh. The hood keeps you as warm as a light wool cap, but with the benefit of covering most of your exposed skin instead of just the top of your head. I wear it at night because cold air still gets into your sleeping bag through the hole where your head is. I've found nothing better to stave off that cold than the Shemagh. Even in the heat, after several hours of backpacking I threw it over my back where my shirts were soaked in sweat and becoming too cool in the sun. It stopped the sun from evaporating too much sweat too quickly and kept the temperature much more even. When you're not using it, it's light and thin enough to pack anywhere comfortably. It was great to take along backpacking in the cold and it'll be the first thing packed when I head out next year, and I keep it on me at all times of the day any day of the year at my cabin. It's permanently a part of my cold-weather gear, and I even keep it in my car during the summer for those cold morning commutes. It was worth the $15 or so I paid and easily that much again.

Rothco -- What More Needs Saying?
I own several shemaghs, and Rothco has been a reliable source for many of them. Their shemaghs are generously sized, woven well, and hold up to repeated use without losing softness or structure. The patterns are clean, the colors stay true, and the fabric has the right balance of breathability and weight. In short, they function exactly as a shemagh should -- adaptable for warmth, sun protection, or everyday wear. Whether I am using one casually or in a more practical, tactical setting, I feel confident in a Rothco. They simply deliver the consistency and durability I expect.

Rothco Shemagh - Purple
After reading many reviews, I decided to purchase this Rothco Shemagh in purple. There were none of the flaws other people reported. No loose threats, no offensive odor. It was made in India and I washed it twice. The color did not fade. It did not shrink. The measurements are 42x42.5 The fabric is not too thin, not too thick and it feels soft. I am absolutely pleased with this scarf. I liked this Shemagh so much, I ordered another one. I just wanted to tell you the difference. My second Shemagh came from Army Universe for basically the same price. They had a color, black and silver, that Rothco did not have. The Army Universe Shemagh is made in Pakistan. There was no bad smell but a few loose threats. There were also some flaws in the pattern and the fabric was not woven as tight as the Rothco one. It was not as soft and it was smaller 38" x 41.5" Overall, the Rothco Shemagh looks better and feels better. Today, I have received my third Shemagh and now I can compare it with the regular Rothco and also one from Army Universe. This one is Foliage Green - which is more a gray with a tint of green, a very nice, camouflage color. It actually smelled nice but I washed it anyway, like all new clothes. I was surprised that the water stayed clean unlike the other two Shemaghs which I had to wash twice and rinse a few times. There were a few loose threats and minor mistakes in the pattern. It is supposed to be lightweight but I hardly noticed a difference. It is soft, like the other Shemagh from Rothco and it is the largest of the three with 43" x 43" Overall the quality was like the Shemagh from Army Universe. I see very little difference in a Shemagh made in India or Pakistan. Being able to compare the three different fabrics, I came to the conclusion that I will buy my next Shemagh based on price and color

Pleasantly surprised upon arrival.
EDIT: I have used this extensively in the hot summer in my garden and on a few hikes. It is wonderful but very pink. It's been wet, dried, stressed, and holds up well though there is some minor tearing where it was really pulled hard. It makes a wonderful shawl and helps keep the mosquitoes from getting through my clothes! ORIGINAL: This has just now arrived and not been tested in the field. After reading a lot of reviews I was afraid I'd get something flimsy, dirty, or smaller than described. I was wrong. This came precisely as described. Not including the tassles, it measures 42x42 (actually a hair short of 42 on one side and a hair long on the other, less than 1/4" difference each way.) It is clean and doesn't smell, except for the dye. It reminds me of when I used to buy t-shirts with decals on them, not a strong smell. The weave is better/tighter than I expected. The holes in the weave are too small to measure - much less than 1mm each. The color (pink) is really pink. It feels strong. Pulling one edge from the other, I feel like I could rip it if I wanted to, but it would take effort. I'm sure I could hold one end down with a foot and rip the other with my hand. But for a lightweight item, it feels sturdy. I won't feel like I have to be dainty with it. I've just looked at some YouTube videos on how to tie this thing and it's long enough to do all of them, though 2" more wouldn't be bad. I'll probably buy another in another color someday. Looking forward to using this one.

Superb quality so far
I have some rothco shemaghs and a few from Explore land which is okay but compared to the rothco, rothco is superb. It is more thicker than the explore land and more tightly sown. No product is perfect I saw one loose thread but removing it never made damage so most likely a spare from factory. I am very pleased with how it's slightly more thicker and very big. These are slightly bigger than the explore land brands. When it comes to shemaghs with standard colors, I am sticking with the rothcos unless I want specific colors to add to my wardrobe. I have a black and a foliage one still going strong to this day for 4 years and there's no sign of rips, discoloration and deformities. If you want a quality shemagh that will hold up with reasonable use, you can't go wrong with these. My only wish is I wish all the shemaghs are prime so I can get them faster and to a secure Amazon pick up location as my neighborhood is bad. Even so I'm willing to send to my sister's place and retrieve them later. Everytime I want a shemagh of standard colors, I stick with rothco. Lol I know I sound like I'm sponsored to them but I ain't lying, these feel so much solid and bigger than others on Amazon.

Can't go wrong with a Rothco
This is my 8th Rothco shemagh. They have all been great I got the grey with black weave this time. Very sturdy, good for when you want something that can be roughed around a bit and not worry about ruining, it will hold up for a while and the price is right. The weave looks great on both sides. One has more black showing, the other has more grey showing. The web page says it's made in China, the label says made in India, just like every Rothco I've bought. Label also says 100% cotton, as advertised. Feels like it too. The fabric is a little rough to the touch, but not as bad as the Explore Land shemaghs that I bought. It began softening up very nicely after hand washing once and wearing for a couple days.

Works great, compfortable, but there is a smell...
I see that others have reviews based on color, so to keep with that system I purchased the tan version. I own several shemaghs and this is the most comfortable so far. It is well made and the tassels are extensions of the actual treads, not added or stitched on later. The material is softer than other 100% cotton versions I own. And now the elephant in the room: the smell. There is a chemical smell to the material and after reading several other reviews I almost didn't purchase it. But then I remembered that most people like to complain about anything, so I figured I'd give it a chance. Upon opening the plastic wrap I was immediately able to smell the chemical wash or whatever it is that they use to treat it. I have been in the habit of hand washing all new clothing articles in white vinegar and water to disinfect and set colors ever since I was a kid ( I'm not here to debate whether this works or not, I've never had a problem), which is immediately what I did to this. After soaking for a about 15 minutes, I rinsed it well and hung up to dry. The next morning the smell was so significantly reduced that it is barely noticeable. Important note: I am NOT sensitive to most smells. Strong cleaners, bleach, chlorine all will mess me up, just like anyone else, but if there is a faint smell I will go nose-blind to it. If you are sensitive to smells, ESPECIALLY since this will be covering your nose and mouth, do not get it! I found others that are comparable to this product with no smell and no reviews indicating a smell on any of the models. Otherwise, try vinegar.

It came on time, exactly as described. It's thick enough to feel durable while thin enough so as not to smother you. I'd order 5 more just to have variety

Shemagh
Lovely quality of scarf with a great design, just as advertised. Excellent for winter or could even use as a shawl. The size was generous too. No problems with packaging or delivery and it all arrived on time.

Durable and stylish beyond my expectations
Impressed by the quality of the fabric. This winter, I was able to keep my neck warm while dealing with Yokohama's very cold windy temperatures. A lot of people have recommended to hand wash instead of using a washing machine due to how easily the stitching can come loose. This isn't a huge problem since this garment has an ethnic sentimental value to it. So far, I'm loving my purchase, however I wish they had a black color in stock.
