What is the ball made of?

It is made of glass. How do I know? I just accidently crushed mine when I put it back together after putting plumbers tape on both connectors and the regulator because it leaked air.

Do i use the middle, bottom, or top of the ball for measuring reference ? also, important: can you answer this with 100% certainty of your claim?

Bottom of the ball. I am willing to stake your life on it (not mine though, the thing costs $17, how certain can you be for $17?).

Can this be used to measure carbon dioxide flow? is there a conversion factor for converting the flow rate to co2?

Yes, of course you can! You'll need to apply a factor to the scale reading or recalibrate it yourself with carbon dioxide. There's a chart of the factors for a large variety of gases relative to air on the Mattheson website - search on-line for "Rotameter Conversion Factors". Because this rotameter is calibrated for oxygen and not air, you'll need to ratio the relative factors for the two gases. Oxygen is 0.951 and carbon dioxide is 0.808. Anyone who says you can't do this doesn't know what they're talking about :)
