That really depends on their fine motor skills and attention span duration. My daughter was about 5 when I started getting her these kits. I'd say the requisite skills are: 1. Fine motor skills to attach and detach blocks 2. Ability to follow diagram instructions to build the set 3. The attention span to put together the set with or without assistance That's regarding building the set. If you want to get this for a 3 year old to build with them and play with the finished product, I'd say go for it! This set is great for pretend play with the 3 different things you can build.
