Important contribution on penology
The authors provide an important contribution to the literature of prisons, particularly women prisoners. Their research project was ambitious, and this book provides a comprehensive look at what they learned. The methods and theory discussion provides an excellent background to the special issues of women in prison, and doing research in prison. The book is mostly well written and well edited; the last substantive chapter (chapter 6) seems to have been missed and is quite unreadable.A review on Amazon is by one of the contributing authors (Ian Ross Macmillan), which is inappropriate.

Better than Harry Potter
Spent the weekend reading Marking Time and the new Harry Potter book. All I can say is that Marking Time blows HP away. It is much more interesting, much more exciting, and much less predictable (Don't we all know that Harry will narrowly escape Voldemort, yet again?). Anyone interested in knowing about the current nature of criminal justice policy and its impact on women has to read this book!!! True it has fewer wizards, witches, and giants, but it more than makes up for it with detailed analysis and insightful critique. Marking Time is a landmark achievement that sets a new standard for both non-fiction and fiction. Fascinating read!!!
